1.4 Intended use of Denoxtronic Set 2

The Denoxtronic Set 2 is designed for working on the DNOX 2.1 exhaust gas treatment system.
It is used for assessment of hydraulic system leakage as well as for checking the metered
quantity and delivery in Denoxtronic diagnosis mode.
Always heed the vehicle and system-specific information on ESI[tronic].
System diagnosis can be used to perform the following functional tests:
- Metered quantity measurement and spray pattern assessment
- Pump delivery and pressure test (max.)
- System bleeding/AdBlue circuit leak test (external
leakage, set not required)
- AdBlue circuit leak test (internal leakage)
- Start-up mode (set not required)
- AdBlue circuit system drainage (set not required)
Attention:
Always drain the system before opening the AdBlue circuit to avoid the uncontrolled
escape of AdBlue. This test always ends with termination of diagnosis. For further
testing, the ignition is therefore to be switched off and on again.

1.5. Basic principles of Denoxtronic 2.1 (DNOX 2.1)

The Denoxtronic 2 series is on the market alongside the Denoxtronic 1.1. These exhaust gas
treatment systems for commercial vehicles reduce the nitrogen oxides in the emissions to
comply with the legally specified limit values. A mixture of urea and water (AdBlue) is fed into
the exhaust gas by way of a metering module upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. The
AdBlue enables the chemical transformation of nitric oxides into water vapour and atmospheric
nitrogen in the SCR catalytic converter.
There is a CAN link between the engine control unit and the Denoxtronic control unit. The
quantity of AdBlue to be metered is influenced by engine parameters such as exhaust gas
temperature, load and speed.
The main difference as compared to the Denoxtronic 1.1 is the absence of a compressed air
circuit: In the first system generation, which went into series production in 2004, compressed air
was used for metering purposes. In the second generation, launched in 2006, air is not used to
assist with AdBlue metering.
