4.5 SPARK PLUG INSPECTION

Note: to reach the spark plug, remove the two screws (B), then
remove the cover (A - Fig. 23)
- Extract the spark plug cap (C - Fig. 24).
- Unscrew the spark plug by the supplied key and remove it.
4.5.1 Spark plug
• Checking, servicing and replacement must be carried out when-
ever foreseen on the routine maintenace table. Page 24

The spark plug is an important element for the engine best run-
ning.

• To maintain it, just remove the power cap and unscrew the spark plug
with the appropriate supplied spanner (if the engine is hot, be care-
ful to prevent burns).
• Check the spark plug when the engine is hot, as sediments and discol-
ouring of the insulator provide helpful indications on spark plug thermal
condition, as well as on carburation and on the general conditions of the
engine.
• A light brown colour of the insulator around the central electrode
indicates a proper working condition.
• Other colours can indicate an engine failure. Do not try to solve the
problem alone, but refer to one of our Authorised Service Centres.
• After you have removed it, clean the electrodes and the insulator care-
fully, using a metallic brush.
Adjust the gap using a calibrated filler gauge: the gap must be of 0.8 - 1.0
mm (Fig. 25).
• Clean the spark plug with compressed air, in order to prevent dirt from
entering the engine. Refit the spark plug screwing it home by hand, then,
with the proper spanner, tighten it moderately.

Note : spark plugs with a heat range different from the recom-
mended one may seriously damage the engine.
Replace the spark plug if it has cracks on the insulator or
corroded electrodes.
