Hl, Four-channel
Balance Adjustments
The feeling of presence,
direction
and depth that quadraphonic
sound
produces
is greatly
degraded
if the
channels
are
not
balanced.
As you know,
the acoustic
balance
is influenced
by
differences
in speaker efficiency and the acoustics
of the room.
Carpets, furniture placement,
and room
size and shape
have
a
definite effect upon
sound
quality and balance.
Adjust each
channel
as follows so that the sound image focuses
at the central
point of the four speakers (refer to the illustration
on page 30 or 31).
1. Leave each switch as directed in Step 3 of "Phasing Checks
on Speakers
and Amplifiers"
on page 20.
Do not move the
rear panel Input LEVEL
ADJUST
control from the position set
in "Input Level Adjustment"
on page
20.
2. Turn the four FRONT
and BACK LEVEL controls fully clock-
wise.
3. If your back
amplifier
has no level control, perform
Step

{f it has, please skip Step A, and perform
Step B.

a back amplifier
having
no input level control
Front right-left balance : Turn off the back amplifier and, while

Back right-left balance:
Turn on the back amplifier and set
the front amplifier's
volume
to the
lowest
level.
Turn
the
MASTER VOLUME control to provide a somewhat lower volume
than
usual.
Listen
to the sound from the back speakers.
\f you sense
an imbalance
of the back
speakers,
adjust
the
BACK LEFT and RIGHT LEVEL controls so the sound
comes
from
a point central to the back speakers.
Front-back balance:
Adjust the front volume with the front
amplifier's control so that the
front
sound
is equal
to that
from the back
speakers.
Then,
you
will hear the sound from
a point central to the four speakers.
If the front amplifier has less power output than the back
amplifier, use the LOW
OUTPUT
for the back connection.
Or,
lower the back level with the BACK LEVEL controls.
Finally skip Step B, and proceed
to Step 4.
B. With
a back amplifier having volume or balance controls
Right-left balance:
Turn off the back amplifier and adjust the
balance control on the front amplifier so that the sound comes
from a point central to the front speakers.
Then, turn off the
front amplifier and adjust the back amplifier's balance contr-
Front-back
balance:
Turn
the MASTER
VOLUME
control fu..,
counterclockwise.
Set
the
front
amplifier's
volume
control
to your
usual
listening
position.
Then,
turn
the
MASTER
VOLUME
control
so that the front speakers provide slightly
fower output than you
prefer.
Adjust the back volume
with
the back amplifier's control
so that the sound seems to come
from
a point central to the four speakers.
4. Set the MODE
selector of the SQD-2020
to NORMAL.
At
NORMAL,
the speaker volume
will be higher than
at MONO.
