GLOSSARY
Bolus (Single Bolus) - A programmable infusion mode that dispenses the
prescribed drug dose once. Any telemetry transmission during a bolus infusion
will cancel the bolus.
Bolus Delay (Periodic Bolus) - A programmable infusion mode that dispenses a
prescribed drug dose at maximum rate at specified intervals and then dispenses
at the minimum rate between boluses (delay).
Bridge Bolus - A calculated dose and duration used when changing
concentrations or solutions in the pump to prevent under- or overdosing the
patient while the old drug concentration is cleared from the fluid pathway.
Calibration Constant - A specific numeric value assigned to each pump by
that indicates the number of electrical pulses required by the
Medtronic
®
peristaltic mechanism to dispense one microliter of fluid.
Changes Screen - Programmer screen that allows changes to be made to the
pump operating parameters.
Complex Continuous - A programmable infusion mode that can repeatedly
dispense the prescribed drug at 2 to 10 different combinations of dose and
infusion rates.
Continuous - A programmable infusion mode that dispenses the prescribed drug
dose at a constant infusion rate.
Infusion Mode - The method of drug delivery (e.g., Complex Continuous).
Infusion modes are programmed from the Changes Screen.
Postoperative Priming Bolus - The bolus amount required to move the drug
from the reservoir to the tip of the catheter; used to initiate therapy after implant.
Pump Memory Error - Error in memory data detected by pump self-check or
programmer check.
Pump Parameters - Pump calibration constant, reservoir level, and alarm
features.
Pump Prescription - The drug dose and infusion mode. Upon completion of
telemetry, the pump starts dispensing the drug according to the prescription.
Pump Status - The drug name, drug concentration, calibration constant, pump
prescription, reservoir volume, alarm status, and date and time of last change to
the pump.
Reservoir Valve - The reservoir valve stops the further introduction of fluid into
the reservoir when the reservoir capacity is reached.
Telemetry - Radio-frequency transmissions between the programmer and the
pump.
Twiddler's Syndrome - Conscious or unconscious patient manipulation of the
implanted pump which can cause catheter dislodgement, kinking, etc.
