Precautions
Do not allow air into the pump's reservoir through an open needle. This can
result in contamination or activation of the reservoir valve. To prevent the
introduction of air into the reservoir, make sure the pump is warmed to 35 °C -
40 °C (95 °F - 104 °F) during the empty/fill procedure before implant and always
remove the syringe/needle configuration together immediately after emptying
and filling the pump.
Do not exceed an injection rate of 1 ml per 3 seconds when filling the pump
reservoir.
Make sure catheter placement and connections are secure. Failure to adequately
connect, secure, and/or suture catheters can result in dislodgement,
disconnection, cessation of therapy, or delivery of drug to pocket or subcutaneous
tissue.

Refill and Side Catheter Access Port Injection

To prevent improper injection through the side catheter access port, always use
the appropriate refill kit for refill procedures.
Always use the appropriate catheter access port kit when accessing the side
catheter access port.
Always use the template and instructions provided in the refill kit or catheter
access port kit when accessing the pump's center reservoir fill port or side
catheter access port.
Prior to refilling the pump or injecting into the side catheter access port, firmly
tighten all syringe connections to prevent leaks.
If local or systemic infection is suspected, use extreme caution when emptying/
refilling the pump reservoir or injecting into the side catheter access port.
Do not refill the drug reservoir until the pump has been emptied completely.
Refilling a pump that has not been emptied completely may result in activation of
the reservoir valve.
The refill volume must not exceed 10 ml or 18 ml, depending on the reservoir
volume of the pump.
Extreme pressure during refill can result in activation of the reservoir valve. To
prevent this occurrence during pump refills, always empty the pump completely
before refilling and use a Medtronic
®
Model 8551 Refill Kit.
Do not exceed an injection rate of 1 ml per 3 seconds when refilling the pump
reservoir.
Do not allow air into the pump's reservoir through an open needle or extension
tubing. This can result in reservoir contamination or activation of the pump's
reservoir valve. To prevent introducing air into the reservoir, close the clamp
before removing the syringe from the extension tubing during the refill
procedure.
Always use a filter when injecting into the side catheter access port (if present);
the side catheter access port does not contain a bacterial filter.
