11.2 Connection Depending on the required safety level a variety of devices can be used as actuators. The pulsed
examples for outputs meet PL e, Category 4 and SIL 3. When there is an error on a pulsed output both the 24
output ports
V and 0 V is turned off and the actuator loses its connection with ground. The achievable safety
level depends on the entire rest of the safety chain and on the actuator.
Other electronic devices which themselves use OSSD input signals can also be connected to the
outputs for performing safety functions, e.g. frequency converters. This configuration allows
devices without their own PROFIsafe interface to be simply controlled through PROFIsafe.

WARNING
Reduction of the safety level
Using the test pulses (so-called dark test) on the safe output ports
allows the safe I/O module to detect and control any errors on the
outputs or the subsequent cables. When test pulses are disabled these
errors cannot be detected.
Disabling test pulses reduces the safety characteristics of the
corresponding output as follows:
– SIL 2 per IEC 61508
– SIL CL 2 per IEC 62061
– PL d / Category 3 per ISO 13849-1
► Disable the dark test on an output only after careful risk assessment of the
overall system.
WARNING
Fault detection for external cross-wiring
When using a safe output port, cross-wiring can affect the safety
function. This can result in loss of the safety function.
► Ensure that cross-wiring of the output wires is precluded.
► Take steps such as described in EN ISO 13849-2 Table D.4 (e.g. route wires
permanently and protected from external damage).
