4. Description and function
A photo-voltaic installation basically consists of individual solar modules that are coupled
together, and of an inverter module that transforms the direct current which is produced in the
solar module in net-compliant alternating current.
The supply of alternating current in the mains power supply is effected via an electric meter
intended for that purpose, thus allowing for the correct billing with the network operator.
One possibility to record the generated energy of the photo-voltaic installation numerically is
to read this electric meter. The second possibility which can be done with the "ES-5" is the
recording of current and voltage before feeding it in the inverter module.
The advantage when measuring before the inverter module is that here actually only the
energy generated by the solar installation is registered. As no inverter module has a degree
of efficiency of 100 %, the conventional electric meter shows only the energy which remains
after the deduction of the energy loss in the inverter module. Thus, the "ES-5" allows not only
for a precise measurement of the effectively generated energy values, but in addition a control
of the degree of efficiency of the inverter module is feasible at any time via the electric meter.
Naturally, the "ES-5" is applicable in other applications besides the mentioned application
purpose, where it is used to record the power consumption of direct current consumers or
sources.
The "ES-5" is placed in a compact housing and is equipped with a double-line display. On the
display, one can read the current power, voltage, power and energy value; the actualization
of the measured data is effected about once per second.
Furthermore, there is the possibility of calling the recorded minimal and maximal values of
current, voltage and output since the last reset or operation of the device.
These measured data storages can be reset at any time and begin anew with the recording
of the measured values.
