5 Description
The Ottobock DeltaTwist combines the function of a shock absorber and the function of a torsional
adapter in one unit. It allows for a dampening motion of up to 8 mm up and down as well as about
+/- 20 degrees inner and outer rotation. Modular Elastomer components (plates and rods of varying
durometers and a continuously adjustable tension) allow you to individualize the spring and dampen-
ing characteristics.
6 Function
6.1 Vertical compression
A short-term load occurs during initial contact while walking, which leads to force and moment impact
in the extremities. The involved leg takes on body weight shortly after initial contact and the related
increase in force may also feel like an impact to the patient. The DeltaTwist vertical compression
characteristic dampens the dispersion of shock waves during initial contact while also reducing
the rate of force during loading-response. In this way the locomotor system can better react to the
loading-response: an improvement for both the comfort and loading-situation for the prosthesis wearer.
The Shock Absorber resistance, with its exchangeable Elastomer bars, is continuously adjustable.
6.2 Torsion
During the stance phase of the gait cycle an internal rotation of the foot (relative to the hip) occurs. In
order to have a natural, healthy gait it is important to obtain internal rotation for prosthetic limbs, too.
The high torsional stiffness of exoprosthetic systems and prevention of any rotation of the joints through
the socket can increase the load on the residual limb. Furthermore, the patient might perform disad-
vantageous compensatory movements.
The rotational function of the shock-absorber makes it possible to compensate for the torsional stiff-
ness of an exoprosthetic system by allowing for individual settings for both inner and outer rotation. A
softer setting for the internal rotation insures the desired mobility while a harder setting for the external
