b) What are accumulators?

Contrary to batteries which are given their charge already on manufacture, accumulators are
electrochemical storage elements which have to be charged before use.
The charging quantity which a fully charged accumulator can give off again is stated
through its capacity in mAh or Ah by the manufacturer.
The charge quantity fed in charging is always greater that that removed in discharging and thus
determines the accumulator effect degree.
The accumulator effect degree amounts for NiCd and NiMH accumulator typically to
around 0.72. This means that for charging accumulators to 100% about 140% of the
charge quantity has to be fed.
Example:
The nominal value of the capacity states the maximum possible charge quantity which the
accumulator can give off. If an accumulator has a nominal capacity of, for example, 2000mAh (= 2
Ah, Ampere hours), it will supply at the very best a discharge current of 1000 mA (= 2A) for one hour.
The actually removable charge quantity is reduced by many different factors, e.g. the
condition of the accumulator, the age, temperature, amount of the discharge current.
With time, accumulators discharge, also without connected consumers, from alone. This
property is designated "self-discharging".
