Se a r ch coil sw e e p ing hin t s
Nev er sw eep t he sear ch coil as if it wer e a pendulum . Raising t he sear ch coil while sweeping or
at t he end of a sw eep w ill cause false readings.
Sweep slowly. Hur rying will cause y ou t o m iss t arget s.
I t is bet t er t o sw eep t he search coil from side t o side in a st raight line and keep t he search coil
parallel wit h t he ground.
Pin poin t in g a t a r g e t
Accurat ely pinpoint ing a t arget m ak es digging it up easier . Accurat e pinpoint ing t akes pract ice,
and we suggest you pract ice finding and digging up sm all m et al obj ect s on your own pr opert y
befor e y ou search ot her locat ions.
Som et im es, t arget s ar e difficult t o accurat ely locat e due t o t he sweep direct ion. Try changing
your sw eep direct ion t o pinpoint a t arget .
Follow t hese st eps t o pinpoint a t arget .
When t he det ect or det ect s a buried t arget , cont inue sw eeping t he
search coil over t he t arget in a narr owing side- t o- side m ot ion.
Make a visual not e of the exact spot on the ground where the det ect or
beeps.
St op t he search coil direct ly over t his spot on t he gr ound. Then m ove
t he sear ch coil st raight forward away fr om y ou and st raight back
t oward you a couple of t im es.
Make a visual not e of the exact spot on the ground where the det ect or
beeps.
Repeat St eps 1- 3 at a right - angle t o t he original search line, m aking
an " X" pat t ern. The t arget will be direct ly below t he " X" at t he point of t he loudest response.
N ot e s:
• I f t rash in an area is so heavy t hat y ou get false signals, slow your sweep and use short er
sweeps.
• Recent ly buried coins m ight not respond t he sam e as coins buried for a long period of t im e
because of oxidat ion.
• Som e nails, nut s, bolt s, and ot her iron obj ect s ( such as old bot t le caps) oxidise and cr eat e a
" halo" effect . A halo effect is caused by a m ixt ure of nat ural elem ent s in t he gr ound and t he
oxidat ion cr eat ed by differ ent m et als. Because of t he m et al m ixt ures, t arget signals m ight not be
in a " fixed" posit ion. This effect m akes t hese obj ect s v ery hard t o det ect accurat ely.
D e t e ct ion r a n ge
The det ect ion range will var y depending on t he size of t he obj ect , t he lengt h of t im e an obj ect
has been buried and t he t ype of gr ound t he obj ect is buried in. The best soil is com pact soil,
wher e y ou can locat e coins at great dept h, especially if t hey have int eract ed wit h t he salt s in t he
ground, which m akes t hem appear larger t o t he det ect or. The worst condit ions for det ect ing are
in loose soil or freshly dug ground or when t he obj ect has only r ecent ly been buried. Ninet y
per cent of all obj ect s ar e found wit hin 6" of t he surface. Adv er se soil condit ions can r educe t he
det ect ion range by as m uch as 50% .

An operat or who is fam iliar wit h his inst rum ent will be able t o do an ex cellent j ob of det erm ining
obj ect size, shape and dept h befor e he digs. He does t his t hrough careful analysis of t he audio
signals com ing from t he det ect or. You should always list en for t he specific charact erist ics of a
signal. Det erm ine ov er how large an ar ea t he cont act generat es a signal t o t ry and " out line" t he
obj ect befor e you dig. List en for t he sharpness or dullness of t he signal and det erm ine t he
st rengt h of t he signal. A coin generat es a sharp signal, while t he signal for a nail is vague.
Ba t t e r ie s
Always car ry a spare set of bat t eries when going out on a fieldt rip.
