1-1 Features
The DNV-5 Recorder Unit is a dockable recorder
using the Betacam SX format. In combination with a
Sony BVP-series or other portable video camera, it
enables digital recording in the Betacam SX format.
(In this manual, the DNV-5 in combination with the
analog portable video camera may also be referred to
as a camcorder.)
The following are some of the features of the
DNV-5:
• Using the Betacam SX format, it provides picture
quality as good as or better than the Betacam SP
format, while supporting nonlinear editing, high-
speed transfer, and digital audio.
• Light weight (about 2.9 kg (6 lb 6 oz)) and low power
consumption (approximately 105 minutes of
continuous recording using a fully-charged BP-L60
lithium-ion battery), with improved functionality and
reduced running costs.
• It can also operate from AC power, using the AC-
DN1 compact clip-on AC adaptor (not supplied).
• With the Betacam SX format, a BCT-60SX "S"
cassette provides a long, 60-minute recording time.
• The Betacam SX format can also be recorded on
conventional metal tape cassettes for Betacam SP
format.
• Shot data, including the date and time, equipment ID
and cassette number, can be recorded on the tape.
• It is possible to record markers on the tape at the
recording start point and "OK shot" markers
(recording start markers, and "good shot" markers)
during shooting, for later automatic detection of the
cuts required for editing.
• A recording review function plays back the last two
seconds of recorded material, for instant
confirmation.
• No adaptor is required to provide color playback on a
monitor.
• The color search function makes tape positioning
easy, with a five-times-normal speed.

2)
• LTC
and VITC
can be recorded, and LTC can be
played back.

1) LTC: Longitudinal Time Code
2) VITC: Vertical Interval Time Code
3) SDI: Serial Digital Interface
• In addition to two audio output channels, by using the
CA-701 Camera Adaptor (not supplied), four audio
channels can be input.
• Connecting a CA-701 camera adaptor (not supplied)
3)
allows an SDI
output to be used.
• It is possible to attach a slot-in UHF portable tuner
(WRR-855A), for improved functionality during
shooting.
• The built-in time code generator can be locked to an
external time code.
• A lithium battery is used as backup power supply for
the built-in time code generator, and can maintain the
time code operation for five years, even while the
main power supply to the DNV-5 is off.
• It is possible to select a battery system for long-term
operation.
• Pressing the VTR START button on the video
camera or the VTR button on the lens allows
consecutive recording to single frame precision.
• It is possible to switch between NTSC and PAL
systems.
• Connecting a VA-DN1 Camcorder Interface Adaptor
(not supplied) to the 6-pin VTR REMOTE connector
allows remote control of some VTR functions from a
9-pin remote control device.
• The DNV-5 has a robust cassette compartment, with
excellent dust resistance.
