PHOTOS 226 & 227. Decorate the parts (194 & 88) and fix them in place on the stern of the hull. It is advisable to bend these
parts into a curve before fixing them in place.
PHOTOS 228 & 229. Decorate the parts (195 & 196) and fix them into place at the front of the forecastle deck.
PHOTOS 230 - 233. Paint the barques (197) white and green on the outside, and brown and black on the inside, as shown in
the photo. Make up and glue the seats (198), gunwales (199) and rudders (200).
PHOTOS 234 - 237. Make up a sling (C) and block (E). To do this tie a thread to an eyebolt (B) and then tie this round a block.
Make a hole and fix the sling to each of the barque seats as shown in the photo. Glue the 4 davits (213) and attach the blocks
(E) to them. Now hang the 2 barques on either side of the hull using the lashing thread (201). Knot the thread to the davit sling
and pass it through a hole in the lower block. Then pull the thread up to the upper block and then down again to the lower block,
finally tie the thread off onto the side of the davit.
PHOTOS 238 & 239. Make up the pinracks (202) and attach them to the columns (132). Glue the pinracks in the area of the
stern deckhouse, at a distance of 5 mm from the stringer. Insert a belaying pin (J) into each hole in the pinracks.
PHOTOS 240 & 241. Make up 2 pinracks (203) and attach the columns (132) and the belaying pins (J). Now glue the pinracks
into place as shown in the photo.
PHOTO 242. Decorate the pinracks (204) and glue them into place on the breakwater cover.
PHOTO 243. Make up the pinracks (205) and glue them into place on the columns (132).
PHOTOS 244 & 245. Glue the pinracks (205) onto the forecastle deck. Insert and glue a belaying pin (J) into each of the holes.
Paint and glue into place the parts (206, 163 & B).
PHOTO 246. Make up and attach one of the drawbars (178) using an eyebolt (B) in the area of the hoists, as shown.
PHOTO 247. Make up the booms (207) and glue on the socket parts (208), having first made a hole in them.
PHOTOS 248 & 249. Make 2 holes, at the distances indicated in the photo, and insert two pieces of eyebolt (B). Now fit the
booms into place on both sides of the ship.
PHOTO 250. Make 16 holes on each side of the deck and insert the belaying pins (J), approximately as shown in the photo.
PHOTOS 251 & 252. Make up and attach the channels (209 & 210). Insert and fix the drawbars (178) using the eyebolts (B).
PHOTOS 253 & 254. In the bow area, make the necessary holes to fix 8 belaying pins (J) onto each side of the deck. Now
make holes and attach 6 drawbars (178) also on both sides of the deck.
PHOTOS 255 & 256. Make 6 holes in the area of the stern and attach 6 drawbars (178) using the eyebolts (B).
PHOTOS 257 & 258. Make 6 holes in the bow area and attach 6 drawbars (178) using the eyebolts (B).
PHOTOS 259 & 260. Make 6 holes in the area of the stern and attach 6 drawbars (178) using the eyebolts (B). Remember to do
the same on the other side of the hull in order to achieve a symmetrical finish.
PHOTO 261. Paint the booms (211) ochre and attach them to the hull as shown in the photos. Attach the chains (212) using the
rings (F) and the eyebolts (B).
MASTS AND SPARS
In order to make up the masts the first step is to cut the rods to size, as indicated in the parts list, or by taking measurements
directly from the plans, which are printed in 1/1 scale.
All of the masts and yards have to have a certain conical shape, which you must give them.
In order to achieve this conical shape for the masts, sand down the rod (using a sander), increasing the amount of sanding
down as you get closer to the end at which you want to decrease the diameter. Turn the rod so that you sand it down evenly on
all sides, until you have achieved the diameter indicated in the plan.
To get the conical shape of the yards carry out the above operations but in this case evenly reducing the diameter at both ends
of the yard.
In order to make up the mast for this model correctly you must take the following into account:
-
The plans
-
The close up photos of the masts
-
The measurements and material descriptions of the parts list
The parts identification (PI) sheets
-
The masts must be varnished and some of the parts that make them up will have to be painted. See the general close up
photos of the masts.
Once the mast has been assembled and varnished attach the tackle (slings, blocks, eyebolts, clump blocks, etc.) and attach
them to the ship.
The mast must be inserted until it comes up against the mast step in the false keel.
SAILS AND RIGGING
In order to make up the running gear for this ship follow the alphabetic order of the figures printed in the plans, indicating the
order for fitting the (ropes, clump blocks, blocks, sails, etc.) highlighted in red. In combination with the parts list this will serve as
a guide with regard to the type of material to be used.
To simulate the aging of the sails you can boil them in tea and leave them to dry all wrinkled up. Fit them in place without ironing
so that they will have some consistency.
