PRECAUTIONS
 Do not allow children or unskilled personnel to handle the unit.
 Do not over-fill the crucible: excess molten metal may splash out.
 Use suitable goggles and safety gauntlets when melting metal and handling cylinders and crucibles.
 Before using the unit ensure that it is properly set up on a solid, level base.
 Check that the crucible outlet and cylinder runner are properly lined up and attached.
 Do not place liquids or inflammable materials in the crucible.
 If the motor shaft locks during normal operation, disconnect the unit from the mains before attempting
to release it by turning it manually.
 After the pour, handle the cylinder and crucible with care: they are hot enough to burn.

INSTALLATION

Positioning the machine

The machine should be placed on a solid base, for example on a sturdy table, and set level. It should be
installed in a place which is clean and as free from dust as possible.
A minimum gap of 20 cm should be left between the casting machine and any units on
either side. This ensures that the machine is well ventilated. Furnaces or other
equipment, which emit heat, should no be placed next to the casting machine.
Connecting the water supply in the laboratory
A fabric-reinforced water inlet pressure hose with ¾" threaded end fitting is used to supply water from the
stopcock (Fig. 1) to the hose connection on the back of the machine.
A hose with an inner diameter of 8 mm is used to drain the water from the nipple on the back of the
machine into a siphon or directly into the domestic water drainage system. Ensure that there is no back
pressure when the water is being drained.
If necessary, check the water supply pressure before connecting the machine. Ensure
that the water pressure does not fall below 3 bars and does not exceed 8 bars, even in
summer. A water coolant pump unit should be fitted if the water pressure is too low. If
the water pressure exceeds 8 bars, a pressure reduction valve should be fitted to the
water supply to the machine.
If the water supply system is known to build up deposits or collect dirt, a filter must be
fitted to prevent the water regulator malfunctioning.
Electrical installation in the laboratory
The casting machine should be connected into a 230 V socket which should be fitted with a 16 A circuit
breaker or a 16 A slow-blow fuse.
All electrical work on the socket or electricity supply and fuses should only be carried
out by a qualified electrician.
