 4: Injector return quantity with starter cranking, but en-
gine not running
Evaluation of the return quantity
• Injector 1 = 4.0 ml
• Injector 2 = 2.4 ml
• Injector 3 = 2.4 ml
• Injector 4 = 0.9 ml
The maximum allowed return quantity is 3 times
as much as the smallest return quantity meas-
ured: 0.9 ml x 3 = 2.7 ml.
Injector 1 has a return quantity of 4 ml and thus
exceeds the maximum allowed return quantity of
2.7 ml. Injector 1 is thus defective and must be
replaced.

3. Operation

Death or severe injury from aggressive
gases and substances.
 Only use the injector return quantity
meter in well ventilated rooms.
 Wear safety gloves.
Risk of crushing from rotating, moving
or movable parts in the engine compart-
ment. Death or severe bodily injuries.
 Do not reach into the range of rotating,
moving or moveable parts.
 Wear work clothes and avoid loose
clothing and dangling items.

3.1 Checking the return quantity with
the engine running
 DANGER - Risk of fire from fuel leaking onto
hot surfaces.
1. Allow the engine to cool for at least 40 minutes
before measuring the return quantity.
2. Position the 0 986 612 950 horizontally and se-
curely in the engine compartment.
3. With the aid of a second person, secure the
0 986 612 950 against falling over in the en-
gine compartment.
4. Press the retaining clamp at the connection
point of the return lines in order to detach the
return lines from the injectors.
5. Seal off the return lines with plugs or clamps.
 No fuel can emerge from the return lines.
6. Check whether the plug connectors of the
0 986 612 950 can be attached to the return of
the injectors.
With some injectors, the plug connectors of
the 0 986 612 950 cannot be attached to
the return. Adapter hose assemblies are
needed for connection.
7. Attach the plug connectors of the
0 986 612 950 directly to the return of the in-
jectors.
8. If direct connection is not possible, attach the
plug connectors of the 0 986 612 950 to ap-
propriate adapter hose assemblies and attach
the adapter hose assemblies to the return of
the injectors.

9. Start the engine.
10. If the return quantity reaches the top marking
(53 ml) in one of the graduated measuring cyl-
inders, shut off the engine immediately.
11. Disconnect plug connectors (or adapter hose
assemblies) from the injectors.
12. Place the plug connectors in the openings of
the graduated measuring cylinder connector
cap .

13. Position the 0 986 612 950 horizontally and
compare the return quantities in the graduated
measuring cylinders.
