Deploying the parachute
To deploy the parachute, please follow these steps:
• Grab the deployment handle with your preferred hand and pull hard. This releases
the deployment bag and you are now holding the deployment bag and parachute
in your hand.
• Throw it away from yourself energetically – in the best case towards the bottom
back, where the centrifugal force pulls it and thus into the free air space. The out-
er container is opened and thrown away in one go. Don't forget to let it go! The
more forcefully your throw, the faster the suspension lines of the rescue para-
chute stretch and the opening process is accelerated.
• Wait for the opening. If the parachute doesn't open, find and shake the bridle.
• Once the parachute is fully open, you should first estimate your remaining height
above ground. If there is sufficient height, the paraglider should be neutralised to
avoid a V-position of the two canopies. This is best done using the two rear risers
(B or C stall). If there is insufficient height, the most important action is to adopt
the correct landing position (upright position, feet together, knees slightly apart
and bent, looking slightly downwards, anticipating the impact). Landing is usually
done slightly backwards. It is advisable to roll over the harness protector when
landing.
To improve the reliability of your rescue system:
!
• Before every re-pack, practise deploying the parachute whilst sitting in a harness
simulator – if possible wearing your usual flying gear (helmet, glasses, gloves!).
• Under the auspices of a qualified training provider, learn the correct procedure of
deploying over water.
• Make a habit of mentally rehearsing throwing your parachute by, for example,
practising putting your hand on the parachute handle during flight. This is useful
preparation should the worst happen.
• Care for and maintain your parachute as stipulated in this manual.
Warning: Opening characteristics with third party deployment bags (extract from
the LTF 2009): The original deployment bag supplied by the manufacturer
is part of the certification process. All certification tests use the manufacturer's
deployment bag. Using a different deployment bag from another supplier may
cause a change in the opening characteristics or even lead to a rescue system
malfunction.
Care and storage
Your NOVA-rescue should always be stored in a cool, dry location. Oil,
paint, solvents, acids and other potentially damaging substances must not be
stored near the parachute.
Please take particular note of the following:
• Avoid direct sunlight and associated UV damage, as well as heat, moisture and
long-term storage in very high temperatures (e.g. in the car in summer).
• If the parachute comes into contact with salt water, it should be rinsed in fresh
water immediately.
• The best way to dry your parachute is to hang it by its suspension lines in a
well-ventilated room. After a water landing, your rescue should be left to dry in
this position for 5 - 6 days. Do not use any sources of heat or other equipment
that speeds up the drying process.
• If the canopy shows any signs of mould, it should be sent to the manufacturer for
inspection.
• Your NOVA-rescue should not be tightly packed when stored for long periods. It
is preferable to leave it more loosely packed in a stuff sack.
• Care during ground handling, after a deployment or during an SIV course will also
assist the longevity of your parachute.
Disposal
The synthetic materials used in the construction of a parachute should be respon-
sibly disposed of. When you wish to dispose of your glider, please return it to NOVA
or to your local NOVA partner, where it will be dismantled into its individual compo-
nents and properly disposed of.
