HOW TO START THE LAWN MOWER
WARNING
Rapid retraction of starter cord
(kickback) will pull hand and arm
toward engine faster than you can let
go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises,
or sprains could result.
• When starting engine, pull the starter cord slowly until
resistance is felt and then pull rapidly to avoid kickback.
WARNING
Fuel and its vapors are extremely
flammable and explosive.
Fire or explosion can cause severe
burns or death.
When Starting Engine:
• Ensure that spark plug, muffler, fuel cap, and air cleaner are
in place and secured.
• Do not crank engine with spark plug removed.
• If engine floods, set choke (if equipped) to OPEN/RUN
position, move throttle (if equipped) to FAST position, and
then crank until engine starts.
WARNING
Engines give off carbon monoxide, an
odorless, colorless, poison gas.
Breathing carbon monoxide can cause
nausea, fainting, or death
• Start and run engine outdoors.
• Do not start or run engine in an enclosed area, even if doors
or windows are open.
The lawn mower engine is equipped with ReadyStart®,
which features a temperature-controlled automatic choke.
It does not have a manual choke or primer system.
1. Make sure the drive control bar is disengaged.
2. Move the throttle control to the FAST position.
3. Hold the operator presence control bar down against
the handle.
4. Firmly hold the starter cord handle. Pull the starter cord
handle slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly.
If the engine fails to start after repeated attempts, see
Troubleshooting section.

HOW TO STOP THE LAWN MOWER
1. To immediately stop the engine and cutting blade,
release the operator presence control bar located on
the upper handle.
2. For normal stopping, move the drive speed control to
SLOW, and then release the drive control bar. Move the
throttle control to SLOW, and then release the operator
presence control bar.
HOW TO ADJUST THE ENGINE SPEED
The throttle control is located on the right side of the upper
handle. The control has positions for SLOW and FAST. For
best mulching and bagging results, always mow with the
throttle in the FAST position.
HOW TO OPERATE THE DRIVE SYSTEM
The rear-wheel drive system consists of a drive control bar
and a drive speed control (if equipped with the variable
speed feature) located on the left side of the upper handle.
The drive system propels the lawn mower forward only; it
does not propel in reverse.
1. Lift the drive control bar (A, Figure 6) up against the
handle to engage the rear-wheel drive system.
2. Adjust the drive speed control (B) to the desired speed.
3. Release the drive control bar to disengage the drive
system.

NOTICE: To avoid wear and damage to the drive system,
always hold the drive control bar firmly against the handle
while mowing. Adjust the drive speed control only when the
drive system is engaged.
