Safety instructions

The instrument is built and tested in accordance with
DIN VDE 0411 Part 1/ EN 61010-1
and has left the factory in perfectly safe technical condition.
To preserve this condition and to ensure safe operation of the device, the user
must observe the notes and warnings given in these instructions at all times.
The unit may be used only in power circuits within the over­
voltage category II with a conductor for 600 V max. to earth,
or within overvoltage category III with a conductor for 300 V

against ground.
Remember that work on electrical components of all kinds is
dangerous. Even low voltages of 30 V AC and 60 V DC may be
dangerous to human life.
Before starting the multimeter up, always check it for signs of

damage.
Should it appear that safe operation of the multimeter is no longer possible, it
should be shut down immediately and secured to prevent it being switched on
accidentally.
It may be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible:
- if the instrument shows visible signs of damage, or
- if the multimeter no longer functions, or
- after long periods of storage under unfavourable conditions, or
- after being subjected to rough transport.

Contents of delivery

The following items are included in the delivery of a BENNING CM 3 :
3.1 one BENNING CM 3,
3.2 one protective carrying case with velcro fastening,
3.3 one 9-V block battery (built into current clamp ),
3.4 one operating manual.
Note on replaceable parts:
The BENNING CM 3 is powered by one 9-V block battery (IEC 6 LR 61).
4. Tester description
The BENNING CM 3 is a meter with Hall effect and manual range selection.

The­display­and­operating­elements­shown­in­figure­1­are­denoted­as­follows:
1 Clamp jaws, for gripping single DC or AC conductors.
2 Current clamp safety guard, protects user from electrical contact.
3 Trigger, to open and close the clamp jaws.
4 Switch, for the HOLD function (retaining function),
- slide the switch to the right to hold the reading on display (the annuncia-
tor H appears in the digital display 8 , and the display is not updated by
subsequent readings),
- slide the switch to the left to resume recording of readings.
5 Adjustment potentiometer (knob). For setting voltage display to nil before
DC current measurements.
6 Switch, for the selection of desired current type (AC - DC).
7 Switch, for range selection (200 A/ 600 A), with annunciator
8 Digital LCD display, shows the following:
- measurement value up to a maximum value of 1999,
- a polarity indicator
- a decimal point,
- low battery symbol,
- the selected current type (alternating voltage / direct voltage),
- the measurement value retained in memory (Hold function).

5.1 General specifications for the BENNING CM 3
5.1.1 The digital display is a 3½ digit liquid crystal display with 14 mm digit
height and automatic decimal point placement. The highest display va-
lue is 1999.
5.1.2 The polarity display 8 ­is­automatic.­As­positive­is­implied­by­the­defined­
input terminal, only a negative pole will be indicated with „-" on the jaw of
the clamp.
5.1.3 Overranging is indicated by „1" or „-1".
