Design and Operating Principles
The phototherapy lamp consists of a plastic-coated
aluminium housing with electronic switching units,
fluorescent lamps for light therapy and lighting, control
circuits, fuses and an "hours used" meter.
The lamp may also be mounted on a mobile stand (order
separately) which allows it to be used at an angled posi-
tion when used with infra-red heated Warming Cots,
such as the Dräger Babytherm 8000.
The light is helpful for malfunctions of bilirubin
metabolism. If a newborn baby develops icterus because
detoxification in the liver has been inadequate, therapy to
lower bilirubin concentration may be required as early as
the first day.
Phototherapy has been found to be a reliable treatment
for excessive bilirubin concentration.
The light converts the bilirubin into a water-soluble form
by a photochemical reaction and so enables natural
excretion via bile and urine.
The blue portion of the light spectrum is most effective in
decomposing bilirubin at an absorption peak of 460 nm.
The Dräger fluorescent lamps emit light precisely in this
peak.
