7. Scope of ATEX categories for NK, NKG pumps
Directive
Group I
94/9/EC
Category M
1
1999/92/EC
Pumps
None
Motors
None
Note: The link between groups, categories and zones is
explained in the 1999/92/EC directive. Please note that this is a
minimum directive. Some EU countries might therefore have
stricter local rules. The user or installer is always responsible for
checking that the group and category of the pump correspond to
the zone classification of the installation site.
8. Installation
Warning
Make sure that the pump is filled with pumped
liquid during operation.
8.1 Pump with single seal
8.1.1 Non-flammable liquids
Category 2G/D
If the operator cannot ensure that the pump is filled with pumped
liquid during operation, appropriate monitoring, e.g. dry-running
protection, is required to stop the pump in case of malfunction.
Category 3G/D
No additional monitoring (dry-running protection) is required for
the pump system.
8.1.2 Flammable liquids
Category 2G and 3G
If the operator cannot ensure that the pump is filled with pumped
liquid during operation, appropriate monitoring, e.g. dry-running
protection, is required to stop the pump in case of malfunction.
Sufficient ventilation around the pump is also required.
The leakage rate of a normally working shaft seal is less than
36 ml for each 24 hours of operation. Ensure proper ventilation to
maintain the zone classification stated.
8.2 Pump with double seal (back-to-back or tandem)
8.2.1 Non-flammable liquids - pump unit
Category 2G/D
If the operator cannot ensure that the pump is filled with pumped
liquid during operation, appropriate monitoring, e.g. dry-running
protection, is required to stop the pump in case of malfunction.
Category 3G/D
No additional monitoring (dry-running protection) is required for
the pump system.

8.2.2 Non-flammable liquids - auxiliary unit
Dead-end solutions - category 2G/D and 3G/D
Ensure correct flow rate, pressure and temperature of the barrier
or flushing liquid. See section 8.3 Barrier or flushing liquid
connections of dead-end solutions for connection of barrier or
flushing liquid. See also installation and operating instructions
mentioned in section 3. Related installation and operating
instructions.
No additional monitoring, e.g. dry-running protection, is required
for the auxiliary unit.
Circulating solutions - category 2G/D and 3G/D
Ensure correct flow rate, pressure and temperature of the barrier
or flushing liquid. See installation and operating instructions
mentioned in section 3. Related installation and operating
instructions.
The auxiliary unit requires additional monitoring, e.g. dry-running
protection, to ensure supply of barrier or flushing liquid.
8.2.3 Flammable liquids - pump unit
Category 2G and 3G
If the operator cannot ensure that the pump is filled with pumped
liquid during operation, appropriate monitoring, e.g. dry-running
protection, is required to stop the pump in case of malfunction.
Sufficient ventilation around the pump is also required.
The leakage rate of a normally working shaft seal is less than
36 ml for each 24 hours of operation. Ensure proper ventilation to
maintain the zone classification stated.
8.2.4 Flammable liquids - auxiliary unit
Dead-end solutions - category 2G and 3G
Ensure correct flow rate, pressure and temperature of the barrier
or flushing liquid. See section 8.3 Barrier or flushing liquid
connections of dead-end solutions for connection of barrier or
flushing liquid. See also installation and operating instructions
mentioned in section 3. Related installation and operating
instructions.
No additional monitoring (dry-running protection) is required for
the auxiliary unit.
Circulating solutions - category 2G and 3G
Ensure correct flow rate, pressure and temperature of the barrier
or flushing liquid. See installation and operating instructions
mentioned in section 3. Related installation and operating
instructions.
