area.
Purpose
Activated carbon filters are used for removing undesirable or harmful suspended matter,
odour-producing substances and taste-producing substances, such as chlorine com-
pounds etc. In Germany activated carbon filters are not approved for use in house
installations.
In the case of water with coarse dirt particles a coarse dirt separator must be arranged
upstream.
For oils, greases, solvents, soaps and other greasy fluids the filters are not suitable.
Caution: Installation of the unit must be carried out in accordance with the
installation and operating instructions in accordance with AVB Wasser V, Art. 12
by the water-supply enterprise or an installation company entered on a list of
plumbing companies approved by a water-supply enterprise.
Function
Activated carbon is carbon with a porous structure and large inside surface area of
500 - 1500 m²/g.
The activated carbon filter unit is filled with filter material and quartz gravel. In filtering
operation the water flows from top to bottom through the filter bed, the contaminants
being filtered off and/or adsorbed.
At regular intervals, but at least once a week, backwashing must be carried out. For this
purpose the water is allowed to flow from bottom to top through the filter bed, the filter
material being loosened up and the contaminants being rinsed out.
If organic substances are to be removed from the water, the unit is rinsed only after
refilling, and after that no more. This means that substances causing turbidity must be
practically completely removed upstream of the activated carbon filter.
Organic substances adsorbed or other substances in the raw water bound by adsorp-
tion are, however, not removed. In accordance with the organic substance content in
the raw water the filter material must be replaced from time to time.
For better water distribution during backwashing quartz gravel is located in the lower
part of the tank.
Installation requirements
Local plumbing codes, general guidelines (e.g. WVU, DIN, DVGW and/or ÖVGW or
SVGW) and technical data as well as pipe disconnecting according to DIN 1988 are to
be observed.
The water pressure may amount to a maximum of 8 bar. The water temperature must
not exceed 30 °C.
In the installation room an open floor drain (at least DN 50) or a pump sump with a
submersible pump (capacity must be greater than the rinsing water flow capacity of the
filter unit) must be present in order to be able to drain the waste water produced during
backwashing.
Fit the filter in accordance with the nominal width in equally dimensioned cold water lines
and before the objects to be protected. At the same time as a matter of principle a
bypass line with shut-off valves must be built in as the unit has to be dismantled for
maintenance.
A non-return valve must be fitted in the clear water line after the plant, in order to prevent
water from flowing back into the filter system.
