Quattro Pulse is a special sequence function allowing
the welder to MIG weld with a "slow pulse" which is
used on many TIG machines. This welding method
can be regarded as a number of partially overlapping
spot weldings giving a characteristic weld that
suggests that of TIG welding (fig.1).
Fig. 1
The Quattro Pulse function has the advantage of
reducing the heat zone at the same time as in-
creasing penetration and maintaining welding
speed. Quattro Pulse can be used with advantage
in a number of cases where special demands are
made on control of heat zone, e.g. in case of
welding two different plate dimensions.
Quattro Pulse can also be chosen in MIG pulse
welding in which case a double pulse function is
produced. Pulse current, pulse time, base current
and base time can be set independently. Also the
length of the arc in the pulse period and base period
respectively can be set independently by means of
the trim key pad. Fig. 2 illustrates the extra terms
used in Quattro Pulse. Fig. 3 illustrates the actual
welding current when Quattro Pulse is used together
with MIG pulse welding. From this it will be seen how
the rapid pulses controlling the droplet pinch-off
(pulse MIG) are combined with the slow pulses
controlling the heat zone (Quattro Pulse).

Setting of the quattro-parameters
The quattro-parameters can be set through a
double press on the key pad when quattro pulse has
been selected. The parameters are: quattro base
amp, pulse time, slope-down, base amp time and
slope-up.
The set current equals the pulse current.
Please note that pulse current and the active
sequence cannot be adjusted from the quattro menu.
The following quattro display is shown after activating
the key pad:
: Indicates the quattro phases. The selected para-
meter is marked with a square (cursor).
: Indicates the value of the adjusted welding
parameter in the welding process.
: Contains the unit and symbol for the adjusted
welding parameter in the welding process.
: In case of sequences, the number at the
sequence is indicated to which the quattro
settings apply.
: Indicates the welding current in amp. This
equals the pulse current
Base amp:
Base amp is set in % of the top
current. E.g. a value of 60% results
in a base amp at 60A, if the pulse current is 100A.
Pulse time:
Reflects the time the machine is
welding with the pulse current.
Time is adjustable between 0.1 and 9.9 seconds.
Slope-down:
During this stage current is reduced
from welding current to base amp.
Time is variable 0-9.9 secs.
Base amp time:
Time is variable 0.1- 9.9 secs.
Slope-up:
The welding current is increased
from the value stated in the base
amp to pulse current. Time is variable 0-9.9 secs.
