The screen displays the message "MAX.", alternating with the reduced charge current to indicate that the
charger is limiting the current.
The ULTRA DUO PLUS 30 now charges the battery using the maximum possible current until its voltage
rises to around 2.3 to 2.35 Volts per cell. The charger then switches to a lower current to bring the battery
gently up to full charge; this process reliably fills the battery "to the brim".
The unit cuts off the charge process automatically when the battery reaches a voltage of around 2.45 to
2.5 Volts per cell. The effect of the automatic charge current adjustment system is to complete a full charge
safely in much less than the usual 14 to 16 hours.
In the final stage the charger automatically continues to charge

current" until you disconnect it from the charger. During this
period the screen displays the letter "T" instead of the charge
current to indicate that it is trickle charging.

Pb discharge program

The typical purpose of this program is to determine the residual

capacity of a drive battery.

To obtain a realistic capacity reading, i.e. one which actually
reflects the battery's condition, the discharge current should be

set substantially below 1C (capacity of the battery = 2 Ah —> C
= 2 A), and the final discharge voltage should be set to around
1.55 V per cell.

as described previously for the Pb manual program.
During the discharge phase the battery is discharged at the
current you have selected. To obtain a realistic capacity reading
the discharge current should not be above 1C (capacity of the
battery = 2 Ah —> C = 2 A).
Lead-acid batteries exhibit slightly lower charging efficiency than
NiCd or NiMH batteries, so you should not be surprised if the
useful capacity of the battery only amounts to 60 to 70% of the
charged-in capacity.

nance mode, i.e. trickle charging.
In trickle mode the charger automatically reduces the final char-

ge voltage to around 2.2 to 2.3 V per cell, which effectively

prevents excessive gassing of the battery even if it is left on
charge for a fairly long time.
This menu is purely for setting the trickle charge rate, and has no other independent function.

ved its worth in millions of battery chargers over many years.
The charger monitors the charge curve and assesses the
peak, or maximum point, on the curve. This indicates extremely accurately when the battery is fully
charged.
When a battery is placed on charge, its voltage initially rises continuously; however, when the battery
is full the cells' temperature rises, and this causes a slight reduction (DV) in the battery voltage. The
charger detects and measures this drop. It is possible to adjust the sensitivity, or trigger voltage (in
mV per cell!) of the automatic termination circuit for NiCd batteries. A practical range has proved to be
10 ... 30 mV / cell. If the trigger voltage is set higher, there is a danger of overcharging the battery; if set
lower, there is a danger of premature termination. We recommend that you carry out a series of test
charges to establish the ideal trigger value for your batteries.
