the seat cushions has been confirmed by CE certification and the declaration of conformity. The
development, construction and production of the products completely meet the requirements of
Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC.
1.4.1 General Safety Instructions
INFORMATION
Seat cushions may only be selected and adapted by appropriately trained and qualified personnel.
CAUTION
Risk of tipping. Inserting a cushion into a wheelchair may change the wheelchair's centre of
gravity, which can cause the wheelchair in some cases to tip over backwards and may result in
injuries. It is therefore important to check whether anti-tippers or adjustable axle supports, such
as those used for lower limb amputees, should be mounted to the wheelchair to improve stability.
CAUTION
Risk of pressure sores. All Ottobock cushions have been designed to reduce pressure sores.
A cushion alone, however, cannot completely eliminate sitting pressure or possible pressure
sores. Ottobock cushions are not intended to replace thorough skin care, good nutrition, hygiene
and regular pressure relief.
CAUTION
Risk of redness of the skin. Before using a cushion on a permanent basis, we highly recom-
mend that the user test it for a few hours under medical supervision, during which time it should
be determined that no reddening of the skin occurs. Examine the skin for redness on a regular
basis. Redness of the skin is a clinical indicator for tissue damage. Should redness of the skin
occur, immediately stop using the cushion and consult a physician or therapist.
NOTICE
Risk of damaging the surface of the cushion. Do not allow sharp objects to come into contact
with the cushion and do not expose the cushion to excessive heat or open flames.
1.5 Function
1.5.1 Cubic Foam
Thanks to its cubic structure, the Cubic Foam wheelchair seat cushion offers enhanced pressure
distribution, and is particularly effective for the type of shearing forces that occur with normal
foam cushions. The cube structure also promotes the circulation of air and thus contributes to a
better sitting climate.
1.5.2 Combi Foam
The Combi Foam wheelchair seat cushion consists of a combination of three different layers:
• Support layer of foam (grey): Efficiently bears user's weight.
• Relax foam (pink): Low resistance foam applies less pressure to prominent body parts
(e.g. ischial tuberosity).
