5. Preventive maintenance
5.1 Calibrating the handheld refrac-
tometer

The ambient temperature must be around
20°C/68°F during the calibration.
Calibrating the handheld refractometer:
1. Lift up the light incidence plate.
2. Clean the prism with a clean cloth.
3. Place 2-3 drops of distilled water on the
prism using the pipette.
4. Close the light incidence plate.
 The distilled water spreads across the enti-
re surface of the prism without air bubbles
and dry patches.
5. Wait 30 seconds.
 The temperature of the distilled water ad-
apts to the ambient temperature of the
handheld refractometer.
6. Hold the light incidence plate up to a light
source and look into the eyepiece.
 A light and dark area appear on the scale.

The light/dark limit must coincide with the
0-line (item 1, Fig. 3).
7. Turn 0-adjustment screw (item 2, Fig. 1) until
the 0-line coincides with the light/dark limit.
 This completes calibration.

Water must not enter the handheld refracto-
meter.

Clean the prism after every measurement
with a damp clean cloth.

Do not immerse the handheld refractometer
in water.
¶
Do not store their handheld refractometer in
a damp environment.

6. Decommissioning
6.1

Change of location

If the handheld refractometer is passed on, all
the documentation included in the scope of
delivery must be included with it. The handheld
refractometer must only be transported in its
original or equivalent packaging.
6.2

Disposal and scrapping

Dismantle the handheld refractometer and sort
and dispose of the different materials in accor-
dance with the applicable regulations.
