• Suitable for the installation of an optical slimline-SATA-drive (e.g. Slimline DVD-burner)
• Compatible with USB2.0 and USB.1.1. The high-speed transfer mode is used for USB2.0.
• The power is supplied via the enclosed wall plug transformer
(Operating voltage for wall plug transformer 100-240V~/50/60Hz, output 5V=, 2A)

Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions! We do not assume any liability for any consequen-
tial damage!
Nor do we assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! The warranty
will be void in such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible
because of safety and approval reasons (CE).
• The design of the mains transformer complies with protection class II. Only use a
standard mains socket as voltage source for the power supply unit.
• Only use the enclosed wall plug transformer to supply the power for the housing
and the installed drives.
• The product must not get damp or wet as this may damage it, danger of a fatal
electric shock!
• The device is not a toy. Keep devices that operate on the mains voltage out of the
reach of children! Therefore, be especially careful when children are around.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous play-
things for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or acciden-
tal drops, even from a low height.
Installation of an Optical Slimline SATA Drive
• Remove the four screws at the edges, on the bottom of the housing. Then, carefully separate
the two halves of the housing (the slim front panel will loosen, it is no longer needed). Do not
use any force during the disassembly.
• Plug in the Slimline SATA drive correctly and screw it in place (Insert the screws through both
plastic bushes on the small, slim adaptor board and screw them tight).
• Put the two halves of the housing together correctly and screw together with the screws
removed at the beginning. Pay attention so the optical drive with the attached board is locat-
ed correctly.
Installation of a 2.5" SATA Hard Drive
www.conrad.com
• Remove the single screw at the bottom, for the insert to hold the hard disk, and remove the
cover.
Version 10/09
• Insert the 2.5"-SATA Hard Disk (height max. 9.5mm) into the housing and then plug it into the
°
correct connection inside the housing.
• Close the housing (there is a lug on the cover that fixes the hard disk in the insert).
Setup
The housing with the installed drives can be placed, for example, under a netbook or mini com-
puter.
Connection
• Switch on your computer and wait until the operating system has finished loading (minimum
requirement Windows ME/XP/Vista).
• Connect the low-voltage from the supplied transformer to the correct input on the rear of the
housing.
• Plug the power unit into the mains socket.
• Connect the Mini-USB connector, on the rear, to a free USB2.0 port on your computer, using
the USB cable supplied.
Naturally, a conventional USB1.1 port on the computer can be used instead of a USB2.0 port.
However, in this case the transfer data rate will be very low (USB1.1, about 1MByte/sec max.).
• Window now recognises the drives automatically (depending on whether a drive, an optical
drive or both devices have been installed).
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive
• For Windows XP, partitioning is very easy using the computer management (click
"Management" in system control, then "Computer Management", "Data Storage" and at last
"Disk Management").
Then, select the correct hard disk drive and create a new partition. It then has to be formatted.
The procedure is quite similar in Windows Vista.
• In Windows ME however, the DOS commands „FDISK" (for partitioning) and „FORMAT" (for
formatting) are required.
Start the MSDOS prompt and enter „FDISK". Under menu item „5. Changing the current hard
drive", the external hard drive has to be selected. Example: If you only have one internal hard
disk drive, select hard disk „2". Afterwards, a primary partition can be created.
Exit FDISK by pressing the ESC button and reboot your computer.
Afterwards the partition on the new hard disk can be formatted, either via the Windows file
manager or with the „FORMAT" command from the MSDOS prompt (ensure it is the new hard
disk that is formatted and not the already existing hard disk drive, or partition, data loss!).

Operation

• The enclosed wall plug transformer must be used for operating the housing and the installed
drives it contains.
• Both the hard disk and the optical drive are available in the same way as conventional USB
data media.
It is possible to plug the USB cable in and out during operation; however, during data transfer
(i.e writing data to the hard disk in the housing) it can lead to a loss of data.
• For writing to CDs or DVDs, the appropriate software is required (not provided).
• Especially with small, slower computers (e.g. Netbooks), you should not set the writing speed
too high. Do not run other programs at the same time, when creating a CD/DVD. Deactivate
the screen saver if necessary; terminate any downloads.
Do not place the housing vertically, because the installed drives can be damaged if
they fall over!
When the housing with the installed drives is in use, do not move it; otherwise, an
installed hard disk could be damaged!
To turn the optical drive on or off, use the button „ODD ON/OFF" (switch position
„ON") or („OFF").
A new hard disk must be partitioned and formatted before it appears in the Windows
file manager and before it can be used.
Always connect the housing to the wall plug transformer first and then plug the
transformer into a mains socket.
Only after this, connect the housing to an USB port using the USB cable!
