Safety precautions

CAUTION
Regularly measure the bilirubin levels of the patient.
WARNING
Cover the patient's eyes with light-tight eye protection to
prevent damage to the eyes.
Beware of the possible toxic effects of photoisomers of
bilirubin.
WARNING
Phototherapy can lead to unnoticed increased water
losses. Ensure sufficient replacement, otherwise there
is a risk of injury to the patient.
The duration of the therapy is determined by clinical
requirements. Monitor the patient constantly.
If a radiation distance of less than 40 cm is required for
therapeutic reasons, patient monitoring must be intensified.
Changes in ambient conditions, e.g. a draft, may influence the
temperature balance of the patient.
WARNING
Additional heat sources, e.g. radiant heaters, increase
the supply of heat to the patient and must be taken into
account. Avoid exposing the patient to direct sunlight.
Risk of patient overheating.
WARNING
The use of reflective foils can induce dangerous body
temperatures.
WARNING
The absorption of light in the patient's skin leads to heat
production. The core temperature of the infant can
increase.
Use in the incubator:
Reduce the air temperature setting by about 2 °C and
reduce the humidity setting.
Use of a radiant heater in manual mode:
Adjust the heat output of the radiant heater accordingly.
Strictly follow the specific Instructions for Use of the
heater.
Monitor the patient's core temperature.
NOTE
Do not block the air vents of the unit.

WARNING
Whilst the unit is in operation, direct eye contact with the
radiation source over a long period must be avoided.
The eyes can be damaged through the effect of the
radiation.
WARNING
Protect patients in the immediate vicinity of the
phototherapy unit from the radiation produced, e.g.
protective goggles should be worn and screens used.

WARNING
Users should avoid remaining in the radiation area for
extended periods. Risk of sunburn.
WARNING
Whilst the unit is in operation, do not use any
inflammable detergents or medicaments.
Do not place medicaments or infusion solutions in the
radiation zone. Fire risk.
