Technical data

Type of camera Compact 35 mm view- and rangefinder
system camera with mechanically controlled shutter.
Lens mount Leica M bayonet.
Lens system Leica M lenses from 16-135 mm
Exposure metering Exposure metering through the lens
(TTL), selectively with working aperture.
Metering principle The light reflected by a metering spot in
the center of the 1st shutter curtain is metered. The meter-
ing spot has a diameter of 12mm and therefore corresponds
to approx. 13% of the full negative format or around
the short side of the corresponding frame in the viewfinder.
Metering range (at ISO 100/21°) From 0.03 to 125000cd/m
at room temperature, normal humidity and f/1.0 corres-
ponds to EV -2 to 20 or f/1 and 4s to f/32 and 1/1000 s.
The left triangular LED in the viewfinder flashes to indicate
working below the metering range.
Metering cell for available light (continuous light measure-
ments) Silicon photo diode with convex lens to the top left
behind the camera bayonet.
Film speed range Manual setting from ISO 6/9° to ISO
6400/39°.
Exposure control mode Manual shutter speed and aperture
setting, adjustment using LED light balance.
Flash exposure control
Flash unit connection Via accessory shoe with central
contact and/or standard flash connection socket.
Synchronisation On the 1st shutter curtain.
Flash sync speed
= 1/50 s; slower shutter speeds pos-
sible.
Flash exposure control Via computer control of flash unit or
via guide number calculation and manual setting for the re-
quired aperture.
Viewfinder
Viewfinder principle Large, bright bright-line frame range-
and viewfinder with automatic parallax compensation.
Eyepiece Adjusted to –0.5 dptr. Correction lenses from –3
to +3 dptr. available.
Framing By projection of pairs of bright-line frames: For 28
and 90 mm, 35 and 135 mm, or for 50 and 75 mm.* Auto-
matic projection when lens is attached. Frame selector can
be used to select any of the bright-line frame pairs. Within
the Leica á la carte program, alternative bright-line frame

sets can be chosen instead. For the possible combinations
and the respectively shown frame/s, and/or frame pairs,

please see the table on p. 89.
Parallax compensation The horizontal and vertical offset
between the viewfinder and the lens is automatically com-
pensated according to the relevant distance setting, i.e. the
viewfinder bright-line frames automatically align with the
subject detail recorded by the lens.
Correspondence of viewfinder and film image The size of
the bright-line frames corresponds to an image size of 23 x
35 mm at the shortest setting distance for each focal length.
With the infinity setting, depending on the focal length,
approx. 9% (28 mm) to 23% (135 mm) more is recorded on
the film than the corresponding bright-line frames show.
Magnification (for all lenses) 0.72x. Within the Leica á la
carte program, the viewfinder magnification factors 0.58x
or 0.85x can be chosen instead.
Wide- base rangefinder Split and superimposed image
rangefinder shown as a bright field in the center of the view-
finder image.
Effective base width 49.9 mm, (mechanical base width
69.25 mm x viewfinder magnification 0.72x). In the case of
the alternatively selectable viewfinder magnifications 0.58x
and 0.85x within the Leica á la carte program they are res-
