8. Withdraw the lead cap and connector boot through the incision and
discard (Figure 8).

Tunneling the extension

Warning: Do not place the lead-extension connector in the soft tissues
of the neck. Placement in this location has been associated with an
increased incidence of lead fracture, which would require surgical
replacement.
Warning: Avoid tunneling too deeply or superficially. Injury to nerve
tissue (such as the spinal accessory nerve), vascular injury, and
tunneling through unintended anatomy can occur, resulting in serious
injury, prolonged hospitalization, or surgical intervention.
Cautions:

When routing the extension, avoid sharp bends or kinks, which may
break the wires. Broken wires may create an open circuit, resulting
in loss of stimulation or component failure and requiring surgical
replacement.

When two leads are implanted, route the lead-extensions so the
area between them is minimized (Figure 9). If the lead-extensions
are routed in a loop, the loop will increase the potential for
electromagnetic interference (EMI).
