Specific Safety
Vacuum and Fuel Pump Pressure Tester Safety
WARNING: ALWAYS ensure there are no naked flames or other ignition sources present when working with
fuel systems.
WARNING: ALWAYS ensure adequate ventilation when working with fuel systems.
WARNING: this tool is NOT designed for use with high pressure diesel engines.
• Be aware that failure of the workpiece or accessories, or even of the inserted tool itself, can generate high-
velocity projectiles.
• Use of the tool can expose the operator's hands to hazards, including cuts, abrasions, heat and carcinogenic oils.
Wear suitable gloves to protect hands.
• When operating the compression tester be aware of moving components within the engine bay.
• Do not use the tool if there are signs of damage. Split hoses and damaged connectors could break abruptly,
causing serious injury.
• Do not wear loose fitting clothing, neckties, jewellery, or other items which may become caught. Long hair
should be covered or tied back.
Intended Use
Vacuum and fuel pump pressure test gauge for testing leaks in the fuel line, vacuum chokes and heating systems.
Also suitable for diagnosing problems with engine valve timing.
Unpacking Your Tool
• Carefully unpack and inspect your new tool. Familiarise yourself with all its features and functions
• Ensure that all parts of the tool are present and in good condition. If any parts are missing or damaged, have

2. Vacuum/Pressure Gauge
3. T-type Adaptor
• Inspect the general condition of the fuel pump and vacuum gauge tester. Check for binding of moving
parts, damage or any other condition that may affect safe operation.
4. 1/8-3/8" Threaded Brass Adaptor
• DO NOT use damaged equipment
5. 1/8/1/4" Threaded Brass Adaptor

Operation
WARNING: ALWAYS wear eye protection as well as suitable gloves when working with this tool.
WARNING: Always keep well away from any hot/moving engine parts. Take care to keep the compression
tester from becoming entangled in moving parts.
Vacuum Test
1. Using the supplied adaptors, connect the Gauge Hose (10) to the engine as close to the inlet manifold as
possible. Ensure that there are no kinks in the Hose. If the engine has two inlet manifolds, carry out separate
tests on each
2. Start the engine and adjust idle speed to obtain a smooth tick over
3. If the needle on the Gauge (2) remains steady with a reading between 17 and 22 inHg, the engine is in good
condition
4. If the Gauge drops back about 4 inHg on the dial, this would indicate the probability of sticky valves. In this case
disconnect the vacuum hose and spray penetration oil into the manifold to lubricate the valves and retest
5. If the needle drops consistently, this would indicate that the valve clearances may be too small or that a valve
has burnt out completely
6. The needle pulsating rapidly under load indicates that the valve springs may be weak
7. If the needle pulsates at idle speeds but steadies under load this is an indication that the valve guide may be
loose or worn
8. If the needle appears to take a long time to drop back after the rpm has been increased several times, this
indicates there may be a partial blockage in the exhaust system
9. If the gauge indicates less than 10 inHg, this would indicate late valve timing, a leak at the inlet manifold or
heat riser
10. A reading between 14 and 17 may indicate late ignition timing
11. T o check the choke, close the throttle and turn the engine over, the gauge should rise quickly to 22 inHg. If the
gauge remains at a low reading or between 3 to 6 inHg then the throttle may not be fully closed or there may
be an air leak in the inlet manifold
Note: the readings given on the Gauge will vary at altitude: at sea level the approximate reading will be 19.5
inHg. Every 1000ft above sea level the vacuum gauge will drop by 1 inHg. For example, at 2000ft the reading
will be 17.5 inHg.
Fuel Pump Test (Mechanical fuel pumps only)
1. Disconnect the fuel pump inlet pipe and plug the pipe to prevent fuel spillage
2. Using the Connectors provided, connect the vacuum pipe to the fuel pump inlet connection
3. Start the engine and if the Gauge indicates approximately 10inHg then the pump is operating correctly
Fuel Pump Pressure Test (Mechanical fuel pumps only)
1. Disconnect the fuel pump outlet pipe
2. Connect the Gauge to the outlet connection of the fuel pump
3. Start the engine. There should be enough fuel in the carburettor to allow the engine to run for approximately 2
minutes
4. Check the pressure reading and compare to the manufacturers specification for that model
5. The pressure in the fuel pump should remain relatively constant for several minutes after the engine has
stopped running. If the pressure drops quickly check the seals and the fuel pump diaphragm for leaks

Carburettor Test
Note: Before attempting to carry out carburettor test ensure that the ignition timing, spark plugs and valve
clearances are all correctly adjusted.
1. Connect the Gauge Hose to the inlet manifold
2. Start the engine and run until it reaches normal operating temperature. The Gauge should read steadily
between 17 and 22inHg while idling. If the needle idles between 14 and 22inHg the carburettor requires
adjustment
Note: See manufacturer's specifications and instructions for adjustment of individual vehicles.
Note: If the carburettor is worn or has blocked or incorrect jets it may not be possible to correctly adjust to its
optimum.
IMPORTANT: No liability is accepted for incorrect use of product.
