1. Safety instructions

It is absolutely necessary to study the operating manual
before starting the machine.
NOVUS electric stapling guns are designed to be connected
to 230 volts a.c., 50 Hz. A mains fuse of at least 10 amps
medium-slow is adequate. The machines have protected
insulation corresponding to protection class II
designed for brief operation (see technical data). For your
own safety and to avoid unnecessary wear of the equip-
ment, you are recommended to let them cool down for the
times stipulated!
Before starting work do not fail to check the proper
function of the safety and release switch as well as the
tightness of nuts, screws and bolts. The machines are
activated by pressing down the trigger. Some machines are
equipped with an additional safety device (see operating
instrutions).
Modifications to the machines such as removal or blocking
of parts are contrary to regulations. The machine must
never be pointed at yourself or at any other person, nor
must it ever be triggered / fired into the air.
Staples or nails leaving the nose are dangerous and may
cause injuries. For further protection use safety precauti-
ons, for example eye protectors or ear plugs.
Keep stapling guns away from children.
Protect the product against damp.
For maintenance to the machine, such as changing the
front plate or magazine, clearance of faults caused by jam-
med staples/ nails or any visible damage to the product or
mains cable, ALWAYS disconnect mains plug.
Never use the cable to carry the apparatus or to pull out
the mains plug.
Protect the cable from sharp edges in order to avoid a short
circuit and fire risk.
All defective or non-working machines should be repaired
only by fully trained technicians.
2. NOVUS fasteners
The NOVUS electric stapling guns J-171 and J-172 A use
NOVUS staples 4/18-30 as well as NOVUS nails J 16, J 19,
J 25 and J 30 in wood timber of standard quality.
3. Loading the apparatus (see I and II)
The machine is designed as a rear loader. Push the slide
rod at the rear end gently forwards and let it unlatch
upwards. Then pull it right out of the magazine space, tog-
ether with the slide. Insert NOVUS staples or NOVUS nails
into the magazine guide. Great care must be taken that the
nails, whatever their length, are always placed with their
tips against the bottom of the magazine guide. This is the
only way of ensuring satisfactory results with nails. Then
reinsert the slide and let the slide rod latch in.

4. Electronic control of impacting force
The adjusting knob below the supply line is used for the
continuous control of the impacting force. The impacting
force increases when turning the adjusting knob clockwi-
se. This enables adjustment to the correct driving-in force
depending on the hardness of the material for the stapling
(hard or soft wood) and the length of the means of stapling
(staples or nails).
5. Operating with safety triggering
a) Load apparatus (see I).
b) Connect mains plug.
c) Fix the nose of the apparatus on the material for
stapling and actuate the triggering switch.
Important hint: Avoid actuating the triggering switch
Attention:
d) If necessary, readjust the impacting force.
6. NOVUS electric stapling guns
J-171 and J 172A
have a contact security device. The nose of the apparatus
must be fixed firmly on the material for stapling, i. e. the
pivotelly mounted magazine must bear against the tool
casing during the stapling operation (see IV).
a) With the NOVUS J-171, when the apparatus is firmly
applied, if the stapling means have not been fully driven
in, PAST-IMPACTING can be performed by several
actuations of the triggering switch, without putting
down the apparatus in the meantime.
b) In the case of the NOVUS J-172 A, actuating the trigger
once with the tool firmly in place will automatically
produce MULTIPLE STRIKING on staples which have
not been completely driven in. This means that the
tacker will automatically continue striking the staple
(maximum 4 strikes) until it is fully penetrated into the
material being stapled.
With either apparatus, therefore, this ensures that in all
cases the stapling means can be fully driven in, even when
very hard material is to be stapled.
Attention: After-impacting and multiple striking is not
possible when using the nail types J 16, J 19
and J 25.
