k) Non-contact AC voltage detection

This function should not be used to detect the absence of voltage in electrical systems. A 2-pin
contact measurement should always be performed for this.
The NCV function (non-contact voltage detection) contactlessly detects the presence of an AC voltage in electrical
conductors. The NCV sensor (13) is located on the front of the measuring instrument.
A potential alternating voltage is displayed optically with the indicator
light (1) above the display. The light intensity increases with the level of
voltage or as distance reduces. This detector function is activated as
soon as the measuring instrument is switched on.
- Disconnect all test leads from the measuring instrument. No test
leads are required for this function.
- Switch the DMM on. Select any measuring function.
- Move the measuring instrument towards a known AC voltage source
front first. Always perform this test in order to avoid incorrect de-
tection. The display begins to light up if an alternating voltage is
present. The light intensity is dependent on the voltage level or the
distance to the live conductor.
- Perform test on the intended wire, etc.
- Turn the DMM off after completing the test.
The highly sensitive NCV sensor may detect voltage when
static electricity is present. This is normal and is not a mal-
function.

13. IR thermal imaging mode

In order to obtain precise measured values, the measuring instrument must be adjusted to the
ambient temperature. Allow the device to adjust to the ambient temperature after relocation.
Longer IR measurements of high temperatures, with close measuring distance, lead to self-heat-
ing of the measuring instrument and thus to inaccurate measurements. In order to obtain precise
measured values, remember the following rule of thumb: The higher the temperature, the greater
the measuring distance and the shorter the measuring time.
Shiny surfaces affect the IR measurement results. To compensate, the shiny part of the surface can be
covered with adhesive tape or matt black paint. The device cannot measure through transparent surfaces
such as glass. Instead, it measures the surface temperature of the glass.
The multimeter allows simultaneous operation as a thermal imaging camera for imaging temperature measurement.
Thus, it is possible to combine electrical measured values with temperature distribution. This way, potential system
failures can be detected early and weaknesses rectified.
