6. Troubleshooting
Error
Cell temperature does
not exceed
Potentiostat is going in
overpotential
False potential
Noisy signal
Electrolyte leackage
Possible causes
Poor contact
PTC heating element in
silicone is defect
Poor contacts
Counter electrode
Gas bubbles in front of the
reference electrode
Gas bubbles
in Haber-Luggin capillary
Impedance of the reference
electrode or Haber-Luggin
capillary is too high
Plastic thumb screws not
tightened
O-ring or silicone sealing is
not placed properly

Check
Check the connecting leads of the
heating elements
Measure the resistance of cold the
heating elements: 15 Ohm
Check the connecting leads of the
potentiostat
Check the multilam plugs of the
cell
Remove the counter electrode and
check its condition
Move the reference electrode a
little up and down
Suck air out of the reference
electrode hole with a pipette ball
Adjust the current range of the
potentiostat
Tighten the thumb screws
Check the position of the contact
screws and fixing pins.
