ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES FOR BATTERY-
POWERED PRUNING SHEAR
1. This tool is for pruning branches. Do not use it
for any job except that for which it is intended.
2. Don't use the tool or perform battery charging
operations in the rain.
3. Don't leave the tool in rain or wet locations.
4. Keep bystanders well away from your work area.
5. Be careful not to catch foreign matter between
the blades. If the blades are jammed with foreign
matter, immediately switch off the tool and dis-
connect the battery from the tool. Then remove
the foreign matter from the blades.
6. Never hold the branch you are pruning with your
free hand. Keep your free hand away from the
cutting area. Never touch the blades, they are
very sharp and you may cut yourself. (Fig. 1)
7. Don't force the tool to make it cut. You could slip
and injure yourself or cut something else unin-
tentionally.
8. Avoid cutting electrical wires that may be hid-
den.
9. Always check the blades carefully before opera-
tion.
10. Handle the blades with extreme care to prevent
cuts or injury from the blades.
11. Disconnect the battery from the tool after each
use and before attempting to perform inspection
or maintenance.
12. When not in use, always keep the tool in its hol-
ster.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Charging (Fig. 2 & 3)
Plug the fast charger into the power receptacle and con-
nect the charging plug into the charging connector on the
battery. Press the start button (red). The charging light
will come on and charging will begin. When the charging
light goes out after about one hour, the charging will be
completed. If the charging light goes out within one
minute after pressing the start button, the battery is dead.
Replace it with a new one. After charging, disconnect the
charger from the battery and power receptacle.
CAUTION:
• Your new battery is not charged. You will need to
charge it before use.
• When charging, always disconnect the tool from the
battery.
• Do not operate the tool during charging.
• Do not keep the start button pressed in with tape, etc.
or the circuit will not function properly. Also, a malfunc-
tion of the charger may result possibly causing over-
heating, etc.
• Use only Makita fast charger DC1401 to charge the
battery 1402. The use of any other chargers may cause
damage to the battery.
• If you try to charge a just-operated battery, sometimes
the charging light will not come on. If this occurs, let the
battery cool off for a while. Then try to charge it once
more.
• When you charge a new battery or a battery which has
not been used for a long period, it may not accept a full
charge. This is a normal condition and does not indi-
cate a problem. You can recharge the battery fully after
discharging it completely a couple of times.
• If you wish to charge two batteries, allow 15 minutes
between chargings on the fast charger.
Wearing battery (Fig. 4)
Hang the battery on your back at approximately waist
height using the shoulder strap and the adjusting strap.
Then buckle the waist belt after adjusting it to secure the
battery.
Connecting the battery to tool (Fig. 5 & 6)
Connect the female connector of the battery cord to the
tool plug and the male plug of the battery cord to the bat-
tery connector. Then turn each screw clockwise to
secure the connector and plug.
Switch action (Fig. 7 & 8)
CAUTION:
• Before connecting the battery to the tool, always check
to see that the switch trigger actuates properly and
returns to the "OFF" position when released.
• Do not pull the trigger without pressing the lock-off but-
ton. It can cause switch breakage.
To prevent the trigger from being accidentally pulled, a
lock-off button is provided. To start the tool, press the
lock-off button and pull the trigger. To stop the tool,
release the trigger. As long as the trigger is pulled and
held, the upper shear blade continues to travel up and
down (cutting continuously). If the tool is switched off
after the upper shear has reached the fully closed posi-
tion, the blade will proceed to and stop in the highest and
full open position. If the tool is switched off while the
upper shear is travelling towards closed position, mean-
ing cutting movement has started, the blade will stop in
the position reached.
WARNING:
If you hereafter activate the trigger again, the cutting
movement will continue .
Overload protector
The overload protector on the tool automatically cuts out
to break the circuit and the button pops out, whenever
heavy work is prolonged. Release the switch trigger and
wait 20 – 30 seconds before pressing the restart button
to resume operation. (Fig. 9)
WARNING:
Your finger should not be on the trigger when you press
the restart button.
CAUTION:
• Do not operate the tool in such a way that the overload
protector cuts out frequently.
• Do not operate the tool while keeping the restart button
pressed with tape, etc. They may cause damage to the
overload protector and the motor.
The battery 1402 also offers an overload protector. If the
tool will not start even after pressing the restart button on
the tool, press the restart button on the battery 1402 as
well. (Fig. 10)
