prevention. Full body suspension on a positioning device may
be difficult to escape from.
Figure 3: RESTRAINT
Anchor a restraint system perpendicular and away from the point
on the edge where the workplace is. Any possibility to fall over the
edge must be eliminated. Trim the line in the length adjustment
element to the right length to implement this.
Take particular care in proximity of roof corners where
additional measures might be necessary.
Figure 4 : TEMPORARY ANCHORING AROUND A STRUCTURE
To construct an anchor, pass the lanyard around a structure and
clip both connectors into the next element of the safety chain (fig.
4A). Ensure that the structure the anchor is constructed on has
sufficient strength. Secure the device with a mule knot and an
overhand knot tie-off (fig. 4B) around the working part of the rope.
With large angles (>90° to 120°) use a ring or a rigging plate to
avoid tri-axial loading on plain connectors (fig. 4C). Always secure
the device, do not girth hitch and protect sharp edges (fig. 4D)!
If the anchor is part of a fall-arrest system, use measures to
absorb shock loads.
Figure 5: TEMPORARY ANCHORING ON A HORIZONTAL
LIFELINE (TWO-PERSON LOAD)
Installing the lifeline
Structural integrity must be guaranteed by a structure that is
suitable for its intended purpose and is evaluated on a per-case
basis as part of a risk analysis to be completed in full.
Construct extremity anchors with the provided textile slings on a
sufficiently load bearing structure (MBS = 15 kN) in the anticipated
direction of the force. Maximum lifeline length is 20 m. If longer than
10 m, fashion an intermediate anchor so that no span is longer than
10 m. Tension (1 person) the lifeline with a 3:1 mechanical
advantage system (figure 5A). Secure the device with a mule knot
and an overhand tie-off (figure 4B). The lifeline must have no
points of chafing (use protectors), carabiners must be secured
and slings must have no possibility of sliding along the
structure!
If exposed to heights (e.g. roof) be always secured when installing
the lifeline. For spanning the length of the lanyard, secure with the
rope adjustment device (figure 5B). Always hold the free end of
the rope when feeding rope.
Connection
Connect the next element of the safety chain directly onto the
lifeline. Do not fashion textile to textile connections as one or
both will get damaged! (figure 5C)!
