Information about the prototype
Thought was given at the DB about increasing performance
for the class V 160 locomotives used for heavy passenger
service on the still non-electrified line with its many curves
from Munich to Lindau. The plan was to enable faster and
more efficient operations on the route Munich – Zürich.
The class V 160 was projected for medium heavy service
and the German Federal Railroad decided to purchase eight
(8) class 210 diesel locomotives with gas turbine as auxiliary
drive.

Pour le trafic voyageurs lourd sur la ligne sinueuse Munich
– Lindau qui n'était pas encore électrifiée, la DB a réfléchi
à augmenter la puissance des locomotives de la série V 160
afin d'accélérer et d'augmenter la rentabilité de la liaison
Munich – Zurich.
La V 160 était conçue pour le service mi-lourd et la Deutsche
Bundesbahn décida donc à faire l'acquisition de 8 locomoti-
ves diesel de la série 210 avec turbine à gaz.
