Operating Instructions
XENOLUX
250-500-1000-1500
Caution:
Be sure to form the flash capacitors before first use
of the equipment as well as after every three month
of storage.
To do this, proceed as follows:
1. Switch unit on.
2. Set unit for full power (1/1).
3. Do NOT fire any flashes!!!
4. Leave unit in this condition for one hour.
5. Do NOT turn on the modeling light.
The capacitors are formed after one hour, and the
unit may be used.
Wireless remote control
XENOLUX units are designed for wireless remote
control. All electrical functions can be controlled in
this manner.
It should be noted that the transmitter and receiver
of the remote control are NOT included in the basic
equipment. However, every XENOLUX has a
connector (30) for the corresponding receiver.
A detailed description of all remote-control functions
is supplied with the remote control unit.
1. Basic outfit
XENOLUX 250, 500
Flash unit with plug-in flash tube, halogen modeling
lamp with bayonet base B 15 d, power cable, sync
cable, protective cover.
XENOLUX 1000, 1500
Flash unit with plug-in flash tube, halogen modeling
lamp with GX 6.35 base, Pyrex globe, power cable,
sync cable, protective cover, two spare fuses.
2. Accessories
Various interchangeable reflectors, folding reflectors,
honeycomb filters, diffusing reflectors, barndoors,
snoots, Fresnel and spot attachments, stands. (See
system diagram at the end of these instructions.)
3. Assembly
The units have a mounting bracket (14) provided with
a 5/8-inch socket (15) with clamp screw (16). The
socket accepts the 5/8-inch studs of lighting stands.
For stands with studs of different diameter, use an
MA-151 adapter. After slackening the handwheel (4),
the entire flash head can be tilted up or down with
grip (1). To lock it in place, tighten handwheel (4).
4. Preparing the unit for operation
Fit halogen tube (see item 13 of these instructions).
Carefully remove the tube from its separate packing
and insert it into the unit. Connect the power cable
to socket (26) at the bottom of the unit and plug it
into an AC wall outlet. Switch the unit on using the
green master switch (8); the green LED above button
(8) lights up. Display (2) blinks while the capacitors
are charging. As soon as display (2) is permanently
lit, the unit is ready to fire.

5. Power supply
The units are factory-set for operation on 220-
240 V / 50-60 Hz AC. Before connecting for the
first time, check to make sure that you power
supply coincides with the voltage given on
nameplate (25).
6. Switching on the modeling light
Once the unit has been switched on with the green
master switch (8), you may switch on the halogen
modeling light using the yellow button (7). The LED
above the switch will light up green. The brightness
of the modeling light varies in proportion to the flash
output selected.
XENOLUX 250 and 500 come with a 150w / 250w
halogen tube, XENOLUX 1000 and 1500 with a 650w
halogen tube. These two types of halogen tube are
freely interchangeable in XENOLUX 250, 500, and
1000 units.
7. Controlling output in 1/10 f-stops
Use knob (9) to vary flash output from approx. 6%
to 100% (five f-stops can be set). The display (2)
shows the output selected in 1/10 f-stop increments;
reproducibility is ± 1%. Flash and halogen light are
controlled porportionally and have a fixed
relationship. When switching from high to low output,
the excessive energy is dissipated internally, with the
display (2) blinking during this period.
8. 100% modeling light
Button (5) serves to set the halogen light to full power
regardless of the flash output selected with knob (9).
Halogen 100%: LED above button (5) lights up green.
9. PROP. X focusing light
The total output of the halogen tube can be reduced
with switch (6). As a result, proportionality of the
focusing light is guaranteed within the Xenolux
system even when flash units of different power are
used.
Example:
Combined use of Xenolux 1500 and 1000.
Focusing light of Xenolux 1500: Full output of 650
W, switch (6) NOT depressed.
Focusing light of Xenolux 1000: Switch (6) depressed,
LED lights green, 650W halogen tube has reduced
output.
This guarantees proportionality even with flash units
of different power.
Switch (6) depressed, green LED lit – Reduced total
output of halogen tube.
The control range available through knob (9) remains
unchanged even in the reduced mode.
10. Visual and acoustic firing monitor
The unit offers visual and acoustical confirmation of
flash firing, which can be activated with button (11).
Switch (11) depressed / LED above switch (11) lights
green:
After firing, the halogen modeling light will go out
and come on only when the unit has recharged. In a
multiple-flash setup it is therefore easy to check
whether all units have fired.
Switch (11) in opposite position / LED above switch
(11) does NOT light: An acoustic signal can be heard
after recycling; the optical monitor is deactivated.
