APPLICATION
UV-C equipment has been used for a long period of time to keep the water of aquaria and ponds
free from floating algae and to decrease the number of germs. UV-C filtration therefore guarantees
that you will obtain crystal clear water and a healthy water environment for both fish and water
plants. Its action is based on ultraviolet radiation, which attacks the cells of animal and vegetable
organisms. As the water to be filtered is directly passed along the quartz glass in a thin layer, the
action is optimum. We advise you to let the UV-C filter burn continuously during the pond season.
In the winter season (from December up to and including mid-March) you should keep the appara-
tus switched off and store it in a dry place to protect it from freezing.
INSTALLATION
The UV-C Unit 9 Watt is used in the Cross-Flow Biofill and Clear Control 25.
The UV-C Unit 18 Watt is used in the Cross-Flow Biofill, Giant Biofill XL and Clear Control 50.
The UV-C Unit 36 Watt is used in the Giant Biofill XL and Clear Control 75.
The UV-C Unit 55 Watt is used in the Clear Control 75 and 100.
These Velda filters have a separate compartment, meaning that the UV-C radiation does not
come in contact with the filter material. Therefore, the micro-organisms in the filter material are
not damaged. The unit can easily be screwed in the place of the screw cap. Place the transfor-
mer in a area protected against the sun. First remove the plastic cover from the PL UV-C lamp.
The spacer protects the UV-C lamp during use. Place the spacer round the lamp before you
place the lamp in the quartz glass.
SAFETY REGULATIONS
Please take into consideration that UV-C radiation is dangerous for the eyes and the skin. Exclu-
sively inspect the PL UV-C lamp through the transparant screw cap. If the flow of water stagnates,
for example as a result of plugging of a defective pump, the UV-C lamp should be switched off at
once. If the apparatus or its flex should become damaged, you should switch off the power supply
immediately too. Please provide a good quality grounded connection to the electric mains and use
an earth leakage circuit breaker rated 30 mA.
MAINTENANCE
In order to maintain optimum action of this UV-C Unit, the quartz glass should be cleaned at least
three times a year. To achieve this, you should proceed as follows: switch off the power supply of
the UV-C and the pump installation. Now carefully remove the quartz tube and clean it, using
lukewarm suds. Any lime deposit should be removed with the help of vinegar. The effective lifetime
of the PL UV-C lamp is about 7,500 burning hours. If used continuously, the UV-C lamp will conse-
quently last for one pond season. It is recommendable to install a new UV-C lamp in March. Only
after a week or two, the output of the PL UV-C lamp will be optimum. This is a normal process for
this type of lamp.
GUARANTEE
Except the PL UV-C lamp, the quartz glass and the sealing ring this UV-C Unit is guaranteed by
Velda for a period of 24 months. In case of wrong assembly, injudicious use or bad maintenance
the guarantee will end. This also applies if the plug, the flex or the housing will be damaged. See
the terms on the enclosed guarantee card and visit www.velda.com/service for the warranty
procedure. In case you have a right to guarantee, the dated receipt has to be submitted.
