The Exhaust-Gas Opacity Module RTM 430 is used to detect the absorption coefficient
K (1/m) of the exhaust gas on compression-ignition engines. For this purpose, the official
measurement involves part of the exhaust gas from the tailpipe of the vehicle being
supplied via an exhaust-gas sampling probe and a sampling hose to the measurement
chamber (without suction assistance) during free acceleration, after which the opacity is
measured. This means that the system measures the level of light attenuation from which
the absorption coefficient is determined arithmetically.
– Effective measuring length
The measuring length (432 mm) is the optical distance through which the exhaust gas
flows. It is adjusted to various, country-specific measuring lengths by conversion (K
factor).
– Opacity (%) and absorption coefficient (k factor, 1/m)
The opacity and the absorption coefficient are a measure of the light quantity
attenuated (absorbed) by soot, white smoke and blue smoke.
– Mass concentration (mg/m3)
The mass concentration indicates the quantity of particles emitted by the diesel vehicle
referred to 1 m3 of exhaust gas. The basis for conversion to the mass concentration
is the conversion table elaborated by the British Motor Industry Research Association
(MIRA).
The diesel engine operates against a load and is tested at one or more type-specific test
engine speeds.
