Die Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in Stratford im US-Bundesstaat Connecticut
produziert den mittelschweren Transporthubschrauber UH-60 Black Hawk seit
1978 in verschiedenen Versionen. Die US-Army war seit 1970, gestützt auf ihre
Erfahrungen aus dem Vietnam-Krieg, auf der Suche nach einem geeigneten
Muster mit guter Panzerung und Reichweite für frontnahe Transportmissionen.
1974 gewann Sikorsky mit dem Modell YUH-60 die Ausschreibung der Army und
produzierte bis 1989 insgesamt 980 Maschinen UH-60A Black Hawk in Serie. Der
Black Hawk besitzt eine hohe Widerstandsfähigkeit im Gefecht. Die Zelle und die
Antriebseinheit vertragen einen mäßigen Beschuss mit 23-mm-Kanonen. Bei
Verlust des Hauptgetriebeöldrucks ist die Maschine noch eine Stunde lang flug-
fähig. Eine Besonderheit stellt der nach unten geneigte Heckrotor dar. So
erzeugt er auch einen gewissen Auftrieb. Bei einer Beschädigung im Flug stellt
sich der Rotor automatisch in die Senkrechte und gewährleistet eine sichere
Landung. Der HH-60G Pave Hawk dient bei der US-Nationalgarde und der Air
Force Reserve als Rettungshubschrauber für SAR-Einsätze. Die US Air Force hat
diese Version zur Suche und Bergung von im Kampfgebiet vermisster
Flugzeugbesatzungen und für den Transport von Spezialtruppen in ihrem
Bestand. Für diese Aufgaben ist der HH-60G leistungs- und reichweitengestei-
gert und mit einer abhörsicheren Satellitenkommunikationsanlage versehen. Die
allwettertauglichen Hubschrauber sind bei Nacht voll einsetzbar und mit
modernster Navigationselektronik ausgerüstet. Zum Selbstschutz können die
Bordschützenplätze mit schwenkbaren 7,62-mm-Gatling-MG oder normalen
7,62-mm-MG bestückt werden. Zusätzlich ist die Installation von schwenkbaren
12,7-mm-MG an den Türen möglich.
Die für eine Luftbetankung erforderliche Tanksonde und der an der Unterseite
angebrachte Bergungshaken sind weitere Merkmale dieser Version. 1992 wur-
den alle MH-60G in HH-60G umbenannt.
Für den Export entstand aus dem H-60 die Serie S-70. Das österreichische Bun -
des heer bestellte im Jahr 2000 insgesamt 9 Helikopter mit der Bezeichnung S-
70A-42. Der Einsatzschwerpunkt liegt im alpinen Bereich. Die robusten
Maschinen sind dank ihrer Leistungsreserven im Gebirge gut verwendbar und
mit der modernsten Navigations- und Sensortechnik ausgestattet.

Since 1978, the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation has produced several versions of
the UH-60 Black Hawk medium lift transport helicopter at Stratford in the US
State of Connecticut. Since 1970 the US Army were looking for a suitable helic-
opter design which, based on experience gained during the Vietnam War, should
have good protective armour and the range to fly logistic missions right up to
the front line. In 1974 Sikorsky won the Army's tender and by 1989 had built a
total of 980 UH-60A Black Hawk helicopters. The Black Hawk possesses a high
combat resilience. The airframe and transmission are able to withstand modera-
te hits from 23mm cannons. The helicopter can still fly for an hour even after
losing main gearbox oil pressure. A special feature of this helicopter is the ang-
led down tail rotor as it also produces a certain amount of lift. If damaged during
flight the rotor automatically moves into the vertical plane to enable a safe lan-
ding. The HH-60G Pave Hawk serves with the US National Guard and the Air
Force Reserve as a rescue helicopter for SAR missions. In the US Air Force's inven-
tory, this model is used to locate and rescue downed aircrew within the combat
zone and for transporting special forces. For these missions the HH-60G has
more powerful engines, an improved range and is fitted with a secure satellite
communications. This all-weather helicopter has a full night mission capability
and is fitted with the most modern electronic navigation systems. For self defen-
ce, the on-board gun positions can be fitted with swivel-mounted 7.62mm
Gatling Guns or normal 7.62mm Machine Guns. Additionally it is possible to install
swivel-mounted 12.7mm Machine Guns in the doors.
The Underslung Load Hook and the Refueling Probe, positioned to enable in-
flight refuelling, are further features of this model. In 1992 all MH-60G models
were re-designated HH-60G. The S-70 version evolved out of the H-60 for the
export market.
In the year 2000, the Austrian Federal Army ordered a total of nine helicopters
designated S-70A-42. Their primary area of operation is within the Alpine Area.
Thanks to their reserves of power in the mountains, these robust helicopters are
extremely useful and are fitted with the most modern navigation and sensor
technology.
