Mounting the bird watching camera
The lens has three default settings for the optimal distance, to ensure that the photos are sharp - you can choo-
se between 1.5 m, 2 m and 3 m.
Using the measuring tape enclosed, and the markers thereon, allows you determine the ideal mounting points
at these distances.
If you choose a different spacing for the installation, you must check, whether the focus of the
lens is correct prior to the next use. Otherwise, the images will be recorded out of focus.
The bird watching camera should be placed, so that the it lies between the sun and the object to be photogra-
phed - i.e. the sun should lie „behind" the camera.
The laser enables close control of the orientation of the lens and the bird watching camera. As long as button
(6) is held, the laser is activated.
For laser operation, please observe the appropriate information in the section „Safety instruc-
tions" without fail!
The device can be mounted in different ways, depending on the mounting location:
Always make sure that the mounting bracket is attached so the front marking (arrow and ins-
cription „TOP") points upward!
• On plane surfaces, the four suction cups (1), are sufficient for fixing the mounting bracket. For safety rea-
sons, (decreasing suction effect over a long period of time) an additional retaining element on the mounting
bracket must be installed!
• The mounting bracket can be hung on a nail or a screw, using the hanging hole (12).
• The hooks on the two rubber bands enclosed have to be suspended in the four holes (4) on the mounting
bracket; the rubber bands allow the bird watching camera to be mounted, for example, on a tree trunk or
similar.
• If you remove the mounting bracket, you will find a standard tripod socket on the back of the bird watching
camera.
Use
The bird watching camera's housing must be kept closed, otherwise, no electronic connection
is available between the battery compartment and the electronics.
Switching on
• Hold in the orange control button (10) on the front, until the green LED „power" lights up. Then release the
button.
• After a minute, the green LED goes out and the bird watching camera is operational.
If the SD card is full (or not in place, or not properly inserted), the blue LED („SD full") is lit.
Operation is not possible. Replace the full SD card with a new empty one/insert an blank SD
card.
The red LED („batt. low") lights up, as soon as the battery is low or flat. Replace the batteries
with new ones.
• The green LED flashes every 15 seconds to indicate it is in use.
Switching off
• Hold in the orange control button (10) on the front, until the green LED „power" lights up and goes out after
a few seconds. Release the button again.
• If the bird watching camera switches off automatically (e.g. if the batteries are low or the SD card is full), the
corresponding LEDs also light up when pressing the orange button:
Blue LED („SD full"): SD card full or not (correctly) inserted
Red LED („batt.low"): The batteries are low/flat and must be replaced
Taking pictures
• As soon as the PIR motion detector (9) detects a heat source within the coverage area (such as a bird or
other warm-blooded animals), a total of 20 pictures are taken automatically during the next 20 seconds and
stored on the SD card.
• During the save process, the green LED flashes rapidly.
You can test the function, for example, by placing your hand in the coverage area of the PIR
motion sensor.
Setting the Time
• Insert the SD card enclosed into a computer's card reader. You will find the program „Setup BWC.exe" on
the SD card; start it (Windows operating system required, at least Windows XP). Follow the program's
instructions.
• After installation, the time and date can be set.
It is essential that the drive name, under which the SD card is registered, be set as a drive in
Windows, before clicking „OK"! The Windows boot hard drive is generally set as default, you
must change it!
• Insert the SD card into the bird watching camera again.
• The images are now saved with the correct time/date, so you can identify when the pictures were taken.
In case you accidentally format or delete the memory card, you can download the software at
the manufacturer's web site „www.brinno.com", from the download site.
Installing the Image Viewer
• The manufacturer has saved a simple image viewer on the SD card. Install the program
„BWCPreviewSetup.exe", if you want to use it.
• If you already have an image viewer program installed on your computer, (you can for example use the
default Windows program „Windows Media Player") then you do not need to install the software.
Tips and Notes
• If you want to test the PIR motion detector's trigger and the correct focus setting of the lens, hold your hand
in the place where a bird is to be photographed, e.g. before a nest box.
The green LED will flash rapidly and then go out (20 images were stored). Wait until the rapidly flashing LED
goes out; do not move your hand.
The PIR motion detector now waits for a change of heat distribution in the image.
Move your hand slightly, the PIR motion detector should now detect a change, the green LED flashes rapid-
ly, 20 images are stored.
• The PIR motion detector does not detect the movement of an object, but it detects the change in the heat
distribution within the area to be observed.
After switching on (and after each triggering), the PIR motion detector save the heat distribution of the area
observed as a reference value. If this value changes, (e.g. a warm object, such as a bird in a cool environ-
ment) it activates the camera.
• Switch off the product before inserting or removing a SD memory card.
• Only use one SD memory card with max. 2 GByte. SDHC memory cards cannot be used.
• New SD memory cards are generally preformatted so re-formatting is not required. If you want to format the
SD card, always use „FAT" or „FAT32" as the file system. However, all data on the memory card will be lost
during the formatting process.
• Make sure that the write protection on the SD card is disabled, otherwise images cannot be saved.
• We recommend the use of high-quality alkaline batteries to ensure lasting and safe use. Rechargeable bat-
teries have a lower output voltage; this leads to a shorter operating time for the bird watching camera;
rechargeable batteries are also temperature sensitive.
• For safe use of the bird watching camera, both the battery condition and the available memory level on the
SD card must be regularly checked.
Press the orange control button, until the green LED lights up and goes out again after a few seconds. The
bird watching camera is turned off.
If the red LED („batt. low") also lights up, you can assume that the batteries are flat and need to be replaced.
If the blue LED also lights up, you can assume that the SD card is full; insert a new, blank SD card.
Then, turn the bird watching camera on again (hold the orange control button for at least 3 seconds until the
green LED lights up). Neither the red (battery low), nor the blue LED (memory card is full or not inserted
(properly) will now light up!
Cleaning
Only clean the product with a soft, clean, dry and lint-free cloth. If it is very dirty, use a cloth slightly moistened
with tap water.
Clean the lens very carefully, otherwise you will cause scratch marks.
Never use aggressive cleaning agents as these can cause discolouration of the housing.
Disposal
a) Product
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be disposed of in the household waste!
Please dispose of the device when it is no longer of use, according to the current statutory requi-
rements.
b) Batteries and rechargeable batteries
As the end user, you are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all used batteries/rechargeable batte-
ries; disposal of them in the household waste is prohibited!
Contaminated batteries/rechargeable batteries are labelled with these symbols to indicate that dis-
posal in the domestic waste is forbidden. The symbols for the relevant heavy metals are: Cd=cad-
mium, Hg=mercury, Pb=lead (the labelling is visible on the battery/rechargeable battery e.g. under
the refuse bin symbol shown on the left).
You can dispose of your used batteries/rechargeable batteries free of charge at your community's
collection point or any place where batteries/rechargeable batteries are sold!
You thus fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment.
