Rechargeable batteries

Lithium ion rechargeable battery (Li-Ion rechargeable battery)
Digital vehicles of FALLER Car System are fitted with lithium ion rechargea-

ble batteries. Such batteries typically feature a very small size and a long ser-
vice life. Moreover, they are resistant to deep discharge and feature nearly
no memory effect at all. Contrary to NiMH rechargeable batteries, Li-Ion
rechargeable batteries are charged following a given characteristic curve.
The benefit is that such rechargeable batteries can be charged very quickly.
Nickel metal hydride rechargeable battery (NiMH rechargeable battery)
NiMH rechargeable batteries have been built into both the digital and the
analog vehicles of FALLER Car System. They are very sturdy and available
in many different sizes. The rechargeable batteries used consist of a com-
bination of 1.2 V cells. Small cars feature one such cell, busses and lorries
have two of them.
Service life
All rechargeable batteries unfortunately have a property in common: their
service life is limited. The service life of rechargeable batteries is measu-
red using the number of charging cycles, that is, the total number of char-
ging procedures that are possible. If lithium ion rechargeable batteries for
instance are handled properly, the possible number of charging cycles will
be approximately 500 before their capacity significantly decreases. Assu-
ming that a vehicle can run for an average of five hours on a charge, this
will be a total of 2,500 hours, which corresponds to a total driving time of
more than 100 days.
