The flash is switched off.
The flash is covered, e.g. by
a finger.
The distance from the
subject is too great.
The shots have been taken
against the light.
The exposure is incorrectly
adjusted.
Backlight mode is enabled.

Remedy
Switch the flash on (see section
entitled Flash from page 54
onwards).
Hold the camera differently.
Move closer to the subject.
Switch the backlight mode on (see
section entitled Backlight from
page 56 onwards).
Readjust the exposure (see section
entitled Exposure from page 38
onwards).
Switch the backlight mode off (see
